DVD playback quality is still atrocious.

My apologies if I look the post of "lol wow" the wrong way Listed. It sounded somewhat sarcastic, so I responded in kind.

Again I think you are misunderstanding the OPs post. He doesn't want DVD to be as good as blu-ray. He wants the One to be as good at playing DVDs as a standalone blu-ray player.

Microsoft market the One as the all in one media solution for your living room. It is meant to replace your standalone DVD and blu-ray player, therefore it should be as good at doing the job as those devices.

This is not what I consider to be an unreasonable request.

 

Wow you guys really need to buy some games.

One of my favorite parts of any DVD playback is the Bloo-Ray Commercial.

Your passable DVD suddenly goes crisp, clear and sharp, the volume goes a little higher and they tell you "This is what it's like with Bloo-Ray"...

Yeah, great, but you just acheived this on a DVD

Some DVD's are poorly made. Some aren't. When it comes to the playback experience a poor quality DVD is going to give you a poor quality experience, regardless of the player.

DVD sales 6 x more than blu ray disc. Guess people just want to see a good movie without the added cost that Blu Ray and Digital Streaming brings en.

Dont forget. Most Blu Rays sold New in the States come packaged with a DVD copy of the movie as well. If they didnt do that they likely wouldnt sell Blu Ray movies at all.

Yes the thread is still going, I've been trying to give my sister a PS3 for over a year just for Blu Ray support. She can't get away from DVD, it's living in the past girly!

 

Personally I still hold out hope for a VHS addon =)

I still have a massive collection of movies on tape and to be honest don't feel the need to replace them while I still have a working VHS player.

Now I confess to buying new movies on blu-ray because the quality is simply better. The greater disc size allows for a higher bitrate.

Going to be a sad day when I have to replace all my tapes.

I broke my VCR on purpose years ago. Wife was still mucking around with tapes to try and record TV shows. The tape was put in back to front on accident by my 18 month old son at the time It didn't survive my repair process.

 

Hahaha! What great VCR hacks they were.

 

If anything, I'm sure they'll bring out an update that will fix the problems with the quality.

 

I find Xbox 1 is a better DVD player than my 360 slim console which always pops up a dashboard bubble "attempting to read media file" even if theres a single micro-millimetre dust or finger print smudge on it. However no problem playing it on Xbox 1. And...
the picture quality is a fraction better than on my 360. So I wouldn't call it atrocious. Don't forget DVD content can be Sub-HD (below 720p). So don't expect to get a "native" 1080p result on your full HDTV. It may be a bit blurry. If you want real HD, go
for Blu-ray movies.
