    DVD Disc Reading

    Hello all,

I have recently noticed an issue where my Xbox One will only play some DVDs. I own ten or so DVDs which work well with the Xbox One, and ten or so which wont play (It just sits at a black screen until the end of time). I recently rented a redbox movie which
did not work either. All of these movies are region one as is the Xbox. So far I have tried:

    - Doing a hard reboot

    - Checking the system for updates

    - Uninstalling and Reinstalling the blu-ray dvd app

    - Checked the dvd/blu-ray settings to make sure they are set correct.

I then called customer support. "Dale" informed me that the Xbox One cannot play DVDs and plays Blu-Rays only. When I sent him a link to the xbox.com page that said it plays both formats he insisted that you have to burn the DVDs to your computer and burn
them to a Blu-Ray disc. An hour and a half later, he said I would have to have my system repaired ( I think he just was looking for an exit from the conversation). He also stated that the first generation of systems could not play DVDs as they have different
    hardware...

Anyways, since Dale was recommending that i bootleg redbox movies as my solution I am going to ignore his advice and everything he said haha.

Anyone else have issues similar to this? Some DVDs work perfect while others wont play. A few were brand new movies, and work fine on my ten year old DVD player and PC. Is there another app that plays DVDs that I could try?

    Thanks,

    Sam

    :)

I don't understand in 2015 why we have to install games on our console

Incorrect HDDVD was like DVD speeds, not at the start, but they were getting faster, and the read times were normal. The bluray is slower because of how the bluray reads or prints it i can't remember one of those two reasons makes it slower to read.

Last gen PS3 would load assets multiple times on the disc to help with load times, now we just install it all so it can load off disc or disk.

HD DVD was superior in every way, even the features that were promised like picture in picture and other features in movie while you watched a film... bluray always said "coming soon" for those features while hd already did it. The real downside to HD Dvd was the size, bluray is larger, of course just like normal dvd's HD DVD could get upgraded without needing new machines like dvd 9's.

No Blu-Ray is a different disc reading to the standard DVD basis. Many companys have the legal right of using it like Sony. But Microsoft isn't one of them so I'm sorry it won't play Blu-Ray DVDs. They require a Blu-Ray Disc Driver.

    DVD Disc Reading

If anyone thought speaking to customer service over the phone was bad..

    Sam: at 23:39:13

Are there certain formats that dont work? As this is supposed to be a "next gen entertainment system" I would hope all standard DVDs would work...

    Dale: at 23:40:07

Yes correct. It should match the format installed on your console for those DVD to work.

    Dale: at 23:40:39

We can actually fount the format type at the back of the case of the disc

    Sam: at 23:42:21

What format should I be looking for? I mean my old 10 year old DVD player can play all of these movies as well as my computer. I don't think its the DVDs

    Dale: at 23:43:16

There are many DVD formatted disc, one example is BlueRay disc.

    Dale: at 23:44:34

Since some standard DVD formatted is out dated, that's the reason we need to have an updated application as well in order to play the disc from your console.

    Sam: at 23:45:41

I tried uninstalling he Blueray/DVD app and reinstalling it so that should be up to date.

    Sam: at 23:45:56

As for the movie this is a new Redbox movie so the format should be up to date I would think

    Sam: at 23:46:16

Is there any other DVD app besides the standard Blueray/DVD app that might work better?

    Dale: at 23:46:19

    Yes correct.

    Dale: at 23:47:12

I suggest to copy the movie from standard DVD into a blank DVD blue ray formatted.

    Dale: at 23:47:30

We can actually do this using your computer.

    Dale: at 23:47:37

    It's like burning a CD.

    Sam: at 23:47:45

Wait so ever time I want to watch a DVD I have to burn it to a different format?

    Sam: at 23:47:55

This sounds more like my xbox is not working properly...

    Sam: at 23:48:35

    sales.liveperson.net/.../10740014... 3/8

    12/31/2014 about:blank

I don't see why my ten year old DVD player and PC can play the movies fine, but my brand new xbox which is supposed to be this all in one system doesn't recognize them without me burning them into a different format

    Dale: at 23:48:53

Most of the DVD nowadays are also available with blue ray formatted disc.

    Sam: at 23:49:37

So basically what your telling me is that the Xbox One can only play BlueRay DVDs?

    Dale: at 23:49:55

The DVD player can able to play the standard one. Some can still play CD movies.

    Dale: at 23:50:42

Not just only blue ray disc.

    Sam: at 23:51:13

Hmm the xbox site says otherwise... is there any way I can escalate this conversation?

    Sam: at 23:52:12

Because I have watched regular DVDs on the system and the site advertises that it works with standard DVDs

    Dale: at 23:52:13

When DVD technology first appeared in households, users were simply popping DVD discs into their DVD players to watch movies.

    Dale: at 23:52:22

an attractive option to the then-conventional VCR. But just as compact disc (CD) technology evolved so that users could record and erase and re-record data onto compact discs, the same is now true of DVDs.

    Dale: at 23:53:38

Other format disc are, Standard DVD, DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DIVX, DVDR, DVDRW, DVDRAM and more.

    Sam: at 23:54:07

Understood. What I am asking is why my system can play some DVDs and not others (all the same format).

    Dale: at 23:54:09

I just example one which is the blue ray which is very popular formatted disc.

    Dale: at 23:54:54

I am actually looking for an application which can able to read and play standard dvd.

    Sam: at 23:55:10

    support.xbox.com/.../watch-bluray-dvd-movies

    Sam: at 23:55:20

According to this the blueray player app should be able to read DVDs

    Dale: at 23:56:13

Yes, that is for blue ray formatted disc.

    Sam: at 23:56:40

"The Blu-ray player app allows you to enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies available in your region through your Xbox One console."

    Dale: at 23:57:02

    Disc and Blu-ray settings

    Sam: at 23:57:08

Looks like Blu-Ray and DVD according to that

    Dale: at 23:57:49

Please check the link and check if the settings are the same with the settings on your console.

  5. Hey there UnfitGiant35!

Sorry to hear about the DVD issue and any inconveniences this may have caused . Just to clarify, the Xbox One console can play DVD's and Blu-ray discs. As far as why only certain DVD's will not play and only others will is odd. What specific DVD titles are
you having issues playing? Also, what condition are the discs in? Just to make sure that we have covered all troubleshooting steps, I also recommend trying the following steps:

    • From the Dashboard, Press the Menu button on your Xbox One controller.
    • Select Settings and then Disc & Blu-ray.
    • Select Persistent Storage and then select Clear Persistent Storage.
    • Follow this process 3 times, then press and hold the power button on your Xbox One console for 10 seconds.
    • Once your console is powered off, unplug the power cord.
    • Wait 5 minutes and then plug in your console.
    • Power on your console and try playing one of the discs that are experiencing the issue.
Once again, I am truly sorry to hear about the issue and the unpleasant support experience. Give the suggested steps a try and let us know the results as well as the requested information. Thanks!

I tried those steps but it did not work. I still have certain DVDs (not Blur-rays) that won't load and I only get a black screen.

HELP ME PLEASE! XBOX ONE BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY NOT WORKING AT ALL?!?!?!!?!?!?

    Hi,

It's not the discs it's your console. If your console can not read DVD movies then it won't read Xbox 360 games either. DVD movie discs use the same type of discs that 360 games use (DVD-9).

The Xbox One has two lasers to read discs. One for Blu-rays - which Xbox One discs games are made of - and one for reading DVD's and Xbox 360 games.

Xbox one not reading any X360 Game-Discs

    Hi,

Have you tried DVD movie discs? DVD Movie discs are DVD-9 format, the same as 360 discs.

If the Xbox One can't read these either then I'm afraid your console needs a repair as the laser that reads DVD's has failed.

    Sorry.

Xbox 360 game Blackops 2 game disc not launching or loading up on my Xbox One X

    Hi,

It could be that your Xbox One Blu-ray drive has a hardware fault, specifically with the diode it uses to read DVD discs. To test this, try playing a DVD movie in your console. The disc you test must be a DVD movie disc, not a Blu-ray movie disc.

If the DVD doesn't read, but Xbox One and Blu-ray discs read fine then your console has a hardware fault and can no longer read Xbox 360 and DVD discs. There isn't a user fix for this, they only option is get your console repaired. Sorry.

Xbox One X recognizes no backwards compatible 360-disc / triggers no download

    Hi,

Sounds like the laser in your console's Blu-ray drive has a hardware issue.

To test if your Xbox One X has issues reading discs, try playing a DVD movie disc. If can't read DVD movie discs either then your console has a hardware fault.

Note: It must be a DVD movie disc, not a Blu-ray movie disc.

There are two lasers in the Blu-ray drive, one for reading Blu-ray discs and one for DVD discs. Xbox One games use Blu-ray and the 360 console used a DVD drive.
  12. Obsessive Power Win User

Backwards compatible 360 game disc issue

    Hi,

Check if your Xbox One can play standard DVD movie discs (Not Blu-ray discs). Xbox 360 game discs use DVD disc media. If your console can not read DVD discs, then it has a hardware fault.
