Duo Battle Royale, Fortnite, Xbox One Cross platform

Hi, this is my first post and first question.

I am not a gamer. I'm the father of 2 gamers. I do have an xbox account so that I can keep an eye on what the kids are doing.

I've never played online games, nor any computer type games.

I like golf.

Unfortunately, I've been dragged into this world because of an issue that arose with my youngest child.

He likes Fortnite. You may have heard of it!

In particular, he likes Duo Battle Royale.

He discovered it on his Nintendo Switch, but finds that a tricky platform to use.

It was then available on Xbox, so he took to that like a junkie on meth.

His time on this is limited to Friday Saturday and Sunday. He also gets banned from all tech from time to time,

so that he can get back in touch with old school reality.

He had been playing Duo Battle Royale on his own account up until about 3 weeks ago.

He was then banned. His ban was lifted as it was his birthday. He received some xbox gift cards from friends,

and blew all of the dough on ad ons for Duo Battle Royale.

When he attempted to play this game, he got this message.



This resulted in tears.

Since last Friday, I have been trying to sort out this problem, and I'm tearing my hair out.

I have been looking over various forums for solutions.

Things I have done include, checked all the settings on the xbox for my account, and the accounts of my kids who are in my family.

I then went on to Epic Games, and linked the accounts. Not easy, when Epic tells you that you already have an account but have no idea who set that up. Turns out it does it automatically to allow gaming cross platform with "Anoni" or something like that.
Once I worked that out, I was able to get all of us proper epic games accounts and link them to all of our xbox accounts.

Still no joy.

Maybe the gamertags have to be the same? (I'm new remember)

That didn't work. The lady from Epic was very nice though.

She concluded it was an xbox problem.

So, on to xbox today.

A nice lady from Grace helped first, but our chat was cut off.

Then a phone call came from xbox, but the line was so bad I ended it during a 5 minute "on hold."

Then I got into a Chat with Freddy D. A nice bloke.

He tells me that kids can't play cross platform on xbox , full stop.

I explained that my kid had been, but he was adamant.

So the question.

Is Freddy D being honest?

Is my child being honest?

What happened to xbox over the past few weeks to suddenly stop cross platform stuff?

Answers to the questions and advice on my next step would be greatly appreciated.
