    DTS vs Dolby Digital

I feel like I have a fairly nice, above average home theater system and I've always been really picky about my sound. I've looked for this topic up and down but couldn't find anything on it.

So simply asked - which sound format provides the best quality sound on the Xbox One? DTS, or DD?

**keep in mind I'm only speaking in terms of sound via optical cable hook up - not HDMI audio**

I have mine set to DTS only because I've always been partial to DTS over DD. But I haven't noticed any discernible differences on the console.

So any opinions? Any technical facts? Anything at all On the two? And yes I know uncompressed audio would be better but I have an older, but still high end, receiver that doesn't support HDMI audio pass thru so I'm stuck with optic cable lol

    :)

I agree that DTS has a higher bitrate in terms of DVDs and Blu Rays. But i can't for the life of me find any info on it when it comes to games or streaming content on the X1 lol because of the way that it encodes/decodes audio information.

I mean, there HAS to be a difference in some way or another since you have the option between the two. DD has always been a standard on consoles and most games were developed in DD 5.1.

  7. DTS is the better choice. And the above poster provided a decent link with info. No idea what else you are looking for?

    DTS vs Dolby Digital

    Short answer: Dolby Digital.

I would assume the Xbox One's Dolby encoder would be 640kbps and the DTS encoder would be 1.5mbps. Does this make DTS better? Not necessarily, it's kind of an apples and oranges comparison. Comparing different codecs based on bitrates is pretty much useless.
The best one to use would be the one that is native to the content you are playing.

So use Dolby for streaming, DVDs, and Blu Rays that are encoded in Dolby and DTS for DVDs and Blu Rays encoded in DTS. Games shouldn't matter, since the audio files could be compressed in different formats and will all be converted to PCM and mixed before
being compressed again by the Xbox.

Actually, all audio is going to be uncompressed by the Xbox, even DVDs and Blu Rays, and then compressed again into Dolby or DTS if you select Bitstream out. The best solution is to just pick one and go with it.

I would choose Dolby, because most (all?) streaming services and most DVDs use Dolby for surround. This way the audio is always compressed using only one format. A lot of Blu Rays use DTS, however they are almost all lossless DTS, so when they are converted
to PCM by the Xbox they show no signs of compression. They too will essentially only have been compressed by one format, Dolby.

IMO. Go with DTS, as long as you have a quality home theatre to run it through. For gaming its pretty awsome. For movies... it depends on the audio format, just be sure to select the corresponding setting on your home theatre(games & movies). I too, have
an older receiver(no HDMI), but still high quality. I've been using headphones through my tv with Xbox1, but these were my settings for the 360. I could hear the shock-wave from a grenade blast travel across the room, I sure do miss my surround sound. You
should experiment around a little and see what suits you best. Also be sure to calibrate your speakers through your receiver, for your speaker placement, to get optimal sound quality. I hopes this helps
