Downloading Updates onto USB

I've plugged in a USB hard drive into my xbox (external) so that I could download GTA 5, which I have successfully.

I wanted to play online thus I went and purchased an xbox live membership, however, it says I need to download updates to play. I tried to download the updates but when I try the default download place is the actual Xbox Storage unit as opposed to the hard
drive (when downloading GTA V I was able to choose where it downloaded.)

I really need help downloading these updates to my hard drive, I really don't want to waste the membership I bought

Please try downloading the update to your computer and then onto a USB Flash Drive, and then installing it onto your Xbox. See the instructions under 'Copy to a USB Flash Drive' here:

Some updates may require installation to the internal hard drive on the console, specifically. To clarify a bit further, do you see any issue when the update is downloading, other than the download location? Any sort of error message or issue with the download,
or accessing GTA V after it downloads?

 

I don't have enough space to download it to my console so it'll appear in active downloads and then say something along the lines of 'Unable to Download' and it will clear from active downloads.

I can access GTA V fine but without the updates I can't access GTA Online.

If you head to Settings>System>Storage on the console, and make sure that the external hard drive is set as the default download location for the console, do you see any difference if you try the update again after that?

If you're still seeing trouble with the external set as the default download location, try transferring some of the content installed on the internal drive to the external drive to make space for the updates on the internal drive, and let us know if you're
able to access GTA online with the update installed to the internal drive.

 

I don't believe that there's anyway for me to set the external hard drive as the default. I've tried transferring content over to make room but as my Xbox is only 4GB I'm still struggling to download it. I ordered an internal hard drive, as I read that realistically
that should contribute to increasing my internal drive space, should this solve the issue??

 

Apologies for the confusion, there - I provided steps for the Xbox One console, but it appears based on your further description that you're seeing this on an Xbox 360 console.

Adding a larger internal drive to the console can definitely help here - if you're still seeing trouble downloading to the internal hard drive after installing, reach back out here and let us know!
