Downloading digital game when disc version already installed on Xbox series x

Rest assured, all Xbox One games (other than Kinect titles) work on Series X/S. If you have the game on disc, you just need to install it on your new console. If you have it as a digital download, you need to sign in with the account that owns the game on
your new console.

Smart delivery is a different concept. Smart delivery games are special titles that where when you buy the Xbox One version of the game - either on disc or as digital purchase - you automatically get the Series X version of the game.

As this game has no up-coming Series X/S version, you'll continue to play the Xbox version on your Series X.

This is an incorrect assumption. You can insert an xbox one disc and download updates that may improve visuals and frame rates on Xbox Series X/S but in order to play you still need the disc unless you own the digital version of it.

Xbox Series X will utilize the Xbox One X version of enhancements while Xbox series S will use the Xbox One S enhancements.

You will not get a free game by borrowing or renting a physical version of a game and installing it on Xbox Series X/S.

The Xbox One can't read and run the data directly from BC 360 game discs. The games don't run from the discs like they would on a 360 console.

When Microsoft made these games BC, it took the original games, and without getting into all the technical details, reverse engineered and repackaged them as a digital downloads so that the Xbox One can play them. This is why as Smwutches as already stated,
there is an 'Update' when you insert a BC disc 360 game into your console. This isn't an update, it's actually the digital version of the game.

This is why your 360 game 'updates' are around the 8-16 GB sizes. Still comparatively small compared to the average Xbox One digital game download.

The BC system for 360 games on the Series X will have to work the same as there is no other way to do it.

However, the Series X is architecturally similar to the Xbox One, so Xbox One games will install and play on Series X just as they do an on an Xbox One console.

And if so how this will work/ what you would need to achieve this.

Xbox Series X will support all Xbox One games (with the exception of Kinect titles). This BC will be supported by both physical discs and digital downloads.

For discs you'll just insert your original Xbox One disc and the game will install and play as it does on an Xbox One. Digital games will be available to download again from your library - you just need the account you purchased them.

If you have an external hard drive for your current Xbox One, you just need to connect via USB to the Series X. Any games you have already installed (digital or disc) will be ready to play.

It will really be that easy.

The Backward compatible games that can be used are already on your account (if you own them digitally) or by inserting the disc version of the game on your console.

Disc: For disc-based games that are a part of the Back Compatible game catalog, simply insert the disc, and the console will begin downloading the game to your hard drive. After the game has finished downloading, you will still need to keep the game disc in the drive to play.

Digital: The digital titles that you own and are part of the Back Compatible game catalog will automatically show up in the “Ready to Install” section on your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, and once they are installed they will show up in the Games section of your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
