Downloaded game gets "can't read disc" error

I have an Xbox 360 (original, not slim) and I've downloaded Grand Theft Auto Five to a 120 Gb hard drive. It worked fine originally, but I've switched to a new Xbox (same model) and now the game gets the error when a disc can't be read properly, even though
I downloaded the game. It's the same hard drive, but this Xbox can't read the game (I have another one that's the black Elite model which also can't read the game, but is able to read Halo Reach which is also downloaded). I have re downloaded the game and
cleared the system cache, but this problem still happens. I no longer have the Xbox I originally downloaded the game to. I suspect this is a licensing issue but I've already done a licence transfer recently (for the one I originally downloaded the game to)
and will be unable to do it again for a while. Is there another way to fix this? Oh and the console can read games on disc.

Ohnaka's suggestion didn't work on my end (appreciated though). All the additional (over 7.5 gb) content I downloaded and (black Ops 2) re downloaded was all corrupted. Each game either froze the xbox or posted the "disc unreadable" message. I'm curious
if Hoplite has had any success or further discoveries. I noticed that Black Ops 2 downloads up to 80% and then speeds up through to 100% (every time)... strange. Seems like a corrupt file that has corrupted the external hard drive at this point.

 

Did you redownload the game after doing the license transfer? If not, give that a try. There is no need to delete it first.

No I'm saying I've done a license transfer before switching to this Xbox, not after. It won't let me do another for a few months so unless I can find a way for this to work, I'll need to wait until I'm allowed to license transfer again

 

If you switched the hd to your new one you may need to re download the game.

 

I'm having the same issue with gta v, I've just redownloaded it on a newer console (the slim version) and now I cant play, please help with a fix.

I had similar problem to this, and the problem was a corrupt HDD. Games that are stored on the bad portion of the HDD will imitate the disc read error. I bought my console from a GAME store, and they were able to swap the HDD, and then I have not had the
error since.

 

But GTA V is the only game to do this, and I've even deleted and redownloaded it as well. I'm starting to think it may be an issue specific to the game.

If the game is being saved on the bad portion of the HDD then it will always fail. The game is quite large at 7.7GB. If other games are smaller then they may not cover the bad area. One way to tell is try and get hold of another HDD or a USB memory stick.

Also there was issues with GTA V being ALL installed on the HDD. You need to install the install files (part0, part1, part2 (2GB each) and part3 (1.7GB)) on the HDD and the play portion (Xbox 360 game of 7.7GB) on a USB stick

 

I moved the play portion to a USB but it doesn't help. I don't have another hard drive large enough for the game and the install files, so I'll try downloading the game to a new hard drive and having the install bits on a USB

 

Alright so it was the hard drive I think. I have it installed on a different one now and it works. I still don't understand why it worked when the hard drive was in a different Xbox, though.

When you moved the play portion to the USB, and it still did not work, then the install files must have been on the bad portion.

It probably worked on the different Xbox as the game may not have been saved on the bad portion of the HDD, or the HDD was not corrupted when it was in the other Xbox.

If you get more stuff to download try them on the HDD you were having problems with GTA V, to see if you get any more disc read errors, but may not see any problems until you have used up more than 7.7GB and if you have removed all the GTA V files from it.
