Download times......

So I purchased The Witcher 3 from a friend on disc. I put it I my Xbox at approx. 14:45 and the game was fully installed at 15:30. So 45 mins for a disc install. Since I have hardly ever bought any disc games for my X1... is this an "acceptable" time for
a download? Do disc's install faster than DD's???

Have new Xbox 360 and downloading free game (Tomb Raider). Have been downloading for over 6 hours. Based on amount of time already used, I am estimating yet another 2 hrs to complete.Total of 5.6 GB for download. Is 8 hrs normal for download???

 

When you install games from disc, the Xbox will download the updates for the game as well. you could be experiencing slow internet speeds a good place to check and trouble shooting can be found here:

support.xbox.com/.../troubleshoot-slow-game-or-app-downloads-on-xbox-one . I have a strong internet connection games will download faster then when I install a game at my brothers house who is using a Verizon data card for internet, so download speeds still
mater when it comes to updating the game while it installing.

 

Not sure how long it takes Witcher 3 to install, however, 45 minutes does not seem like and excessive amount of time. Many experience extremely slow install times whether installing from disc or digital. It becomes more obvious every day that a fast reliable
internet circuit is a requirement for good install/update times.

 

Your friend couldn't just let you borrow it? Bad friend lol. When I used to buy discs, I would always install offline as its much faster.

 

The Witcher also has a 16gb patch......

 

^Along these lines, I don't think "do discs install faster than DD's" is the question. It really all depends on the size of the file to be installed. Discs, theoretically should install on all consoles at pretty much the same speed as long as the disc drive
is the same on all consoles. The downloading of digital content in addition to the content on the disc itself, is what should cause the differences in install time because of the differences in DL time.

 

I think 45 minutes is a good time. Don't know what file size it is because I haven't played the Witcher, but I would usually allow about 2 hours when downloading a normal sized game from disc or up to 4 hours for larger games such as Forza 6/Halo 5 etc (approx
50 gb).

 

Ok so..here is a straight answer: (1) When you do the digital download, depending on your download speeds, it could take from an hour to a few days. There are a host of things that affect it tho....even if your download speed is worthy of the Enterprise.
(2) Here is where it gets weird: even if you buy a disc, the console will try to download the game....even with the disc in it. The disc is just to prove you bought it. So a hack is to unplug the Ethernet (if you have) and cut off the wireless connection.
This forces the console to upload the game from the disc. Which in theory should be faster than a straight download.

What puzzles me about the One is that since you have to install a disc, I puzzle why the dvd drives on it seem to fizz so fast! On the 360, once you installed it, the disc did not play other than the console recognizing the game at launch.

 

The fastest way to install a new game if you have it on disc is to disconnect from the internet.

Let it load completely.

Then reconnect to the internet and open the game.

This will then prompt it to download any updates.

I find if I just play something else for a little bit the updates are done before I even think to check on them.

 

Average install, time from disc is between 20 to 45 minutes with my console connected (wired). On 150Mb Fibreoptic. The disconnect trick works apparently but I've never had to use it.

 

I'm on this thread because my new xbox one with my first game Witcher 3 has been downloading from disc for nearly an hour and it's only 40% complete. My internet is 18gb=16 actual, and I gotta say this sux. Yesterday I spent hours doing the initial updates
until bedtime and hoped to play a game on day 2 but it looks like maybe tomorrow or the next. I like 360 A LOT BETTER so far. I don't see why it would take so long to get to play a disc. Is Playstation any better?

 

Peppy disconnect your Xbox One from live and install off of the disc. After that is done then and only then re connect to live and let it update. The update and install are working against each other that is why it is taking so long.

 

Install offline like that person above me said but be prepared ,as Genchy mentioned there is a absolutely ridiculous 16g patch. IMO this kind of thing is getting a tad bit out of hand, I love updates as much as anyone but 16gigs ? thats more then half of
the full game install.
