Download speed lower on Ethernet??

A hard reset could help maybe.

Hold down the power button until the console shuts down.

Unplug the power brick for 5 min and plug it back in.

That might solve the problem

Why would our download speed be much slower when connected direct to the router via ethernet cable (3 mbps) but it would rise to 60 mbps just by unplugging the ethernet and letting it switch to wifi.?

When it comes to ethernet cables and wifi connections it is always beter to connect directly to the router using the cable. In your case it creates a significant drop in download speed and this can be caused by faulty wiring or by the settings of the router.
The easiest way to test this is by replacing the ethernet cable with a new one. If this doesn't work. I would recommend to look at the settings of the router if this is possible, when it still refuses to go faster than your wifi it is wise to contact xbox
support because it could be a hardware issue and this can only be solved by tech support of xbox.

You may have a faulty ethernet cable. Have you tried using a different cable?

It wouldn’t hurt to reset your router as well.

Technically it should be the opposite, or at least it happens to me like that, possibly the problem is your ethernet cable
