    Download speed cap?

Recently upgraded to 1gb internet with virgin

Ran network speed test on the Xbox wired to the hub and was getting 900+ but when I download a game it's only reaching 450 - 500 mbs is this a server issue limit my download speed? Or am I just wanting to know if I'm wasting money if I'm not getting the full 900+ download speed

    :)

    Hi,

Whether you're 'wasting money' is really only a question you can answer. It really depends on what level of usage you need and use and how many others are using the connection in your property.

As for speed I'm afraid you're oversimplifying it. When you download something from the internet, it's not a direct connection between you and the download server/s. Your data has to go through other systems and networks on its merry way to your console. This will affect speed.

Other factors could be how many other people are also using the same superfast service as you, who are also downloading a lot of content. You also need to factor in where your content is coming from, you may not be downloading from the United Kingdom.

A speed of 450 to 500Mb/s is still fast. A 100GB game could be downloaded in around 25 minutes at such a speed. At 900Mb/s you'd get it in 15 minutes. But you'd rarely get that speed. It's not an issue specifically with VM, it's the internet as a whole and just like the road network, there are peak and off-peak times.

Hello, first it's a pleasure to be able to help you today.

My name is welcome to the community.

Hello, many factors can influence the throughput of games, internet connections do not take fixed routes so variations can occur.

When you download a game you are doing directly from the developers' servers, each can set an Upload rate and also your service provider can do the same depending on the type of content that is traveling on the network.

My **** experience with Xbox one

With PS4 and XBox 1 you need to install the game from the disc to the HDD, this has been this way since this generation launch.

the Operating System needs some space to install to, just like on a Android phone and on a Windows Computer, this also applies to PS4.

Most download speed are capped at around 200mb I believe. (but this can be lower due to server load as well)

As to the capping of Sony download speeds, check Google, you may find people complaining that the download speed is capped at 30-40mb.

I hope this clarifies some things for you.

As far as downloading after your data has reached it cap, contact your ISP.

Once your cap is reached network access speed is slowed.

Some ISP's allow a top up of your data allowance which then puts your network speed back to normal.
