Downgrading Xbox Ultimate Game Pass back to Xbox Gold?

I've yearly purchased Xbox Gold for several years via reoccurring yearly payment of $59.99 on June 1st. This monthly (July 2021) my son received a Xbox Ultimate Game Pass as a gift and activated for the month of July, which promptly CANCELLED by Xbox Gold subscription that I had purchased via reoccurring payment just a month before. While Xbox Ultimate Game Pass is great and all, I don't plan to keep paying the $14.99/mth fee, and have set it to not auto-renew. I feel like Microsoft should honor my Xbox Gold subscription that I pre-paid for in June 2021 through next June 2022... however, from some questions/answers I've read on this site and information on my Xbox Live account page, I suspect this is not the case, and I'll need to re-subscribe to Xbox Gold??? Any advice/comments? Official Microsoft policy on this?

According to the Amazon website, there is a possibility to downgrade, just wait for the subscription time to end. "Downgrading? After you've upgraded, you can still redeem Live Gold and Game Pass Console
codes towards the value of an Ultimate month. To downgrade, just wait for your Ultimate plan to end and re-join."

As above, you exisiting Live Gold gets converted to Ultimate and cannot then be changed back. It means you get the added benefits of GPU (games and whatnot) for the same price as Live Gold as GPU contains LG.

From the GPU page:

"Joining Xbox Game Pass Ultimate automatically upgrades your existing Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass for Console, Xbox Game Pass for PC, and/or EA Play (purchased through Xbox) memberships."

So, if you had 12 months of Gold, then you should now have 12 months of Ultimate. It cannot then be downgraded back to Live Gold:

"Once converted, you cannot re-convert your Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership back to a previous membership"

Something to note, after the trial, if you choose not to continue the subscription you will need to cancel the subscription and let it run it's course. Then you can go back to a gold subscription as accounts can upgrade to Ultimate, but can't downgrade to
gold without the Ultimate subscription ending.

Ultimate includes Gold, as well as Game pass for PC, Game Pass for Xbox & EA Play, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Once the subscription has expired in one year, you can start another Gold Subscription if you wish.

The remaining Gold you had would have actually been converted to Ultimate as well, not just cancelled. So you should have Ultimate through July 2022 (you can verify at http://account.microsoft.com) If you want to go back to regular Gold, you'll either have to cancel the remining subscription or turn off auto-renewal and wait for it to end and then purchase regular Gold. However, since Microsoft has removed the option for a yearly Gold subscription, you would have to purchase Gold as either a 1 month or 3 month subscription if you purchase it through them. 12 month prepaid subscription cards are still available at retailers.
