DoS attack

Funny, someone is trying to DoS attack my IP address that I played with on GTA 5 and is still actively trying to as I type this post. Luckily im smarter than he is, since I have IP flood detection and Block fragmented IP packets enabled on my Cable modem's
firewall and im still getting excellent internet connection to Xbox Live and the rest of my internet-connected devices.

For those of you who get DoS or DDoS attacked from online games, you should look into your Modem or router's firewall; test out and take advantage of your firewall settings. You never know how many useful features your modem or router will provide.

Here is the log that shows the attacker is trying to mess with my internet connection, but my Modem is picking him up. It is labeled as SYN Flood, particularly the one at the very bottom of the list.

Just report, mute and block the person doing this. It's all you can really do.

What that person is doing is illegal!

You should report him to your local police or even the FBI.

Hi guys! While this is useful information, there already are stickies and other official articles about DoS/DDoS attacks. While these sort of attacks are illegal, you may want to consider contacting your ISP first to see what they can do.

As a side note, it probably isn't best to post a screenshot of your modem/router settings like you did, as it shows IP addresses that people may try and trace or do other acts against.

Right now I am getting Dos attacks and have been for the last two days from username: GO HARD Mode, he came into a co-op game I was playing with my clan being disruptive, so we kicked him from the room, I then received threatening messages from him saying
he was a hacker and he was going to shut down my service. Now my clan members (the ones who were present at the time) and I have been getting packet-flood attacks since. I reported him for tampering and listed him ad an avoided player. I have also re-set my
router to no avail. This is very aggravating because now just about every time I sign into my game he knocks me out of Xbox Live. I have called Tech-Support who informed me that basically they have to "catch him" in the act, so for the time being I can't play
any online games. I hope this is resolved soon.

The only way the offending player is able to find you, is if you ALLOW him to contact you.

Please simply block the person on Xbox Live.

Then simply reboot your router/modem, and make sure you have gotten a different public IP.

After that, the person is unable to contact you in a multiplayergame and therefore can't find out your IP. Without your public IP, he can't DDoS you.

So simply block, ignore and reboot.

Problem solved.

Additionally, it is against forum rules to publicly call out Gamertags for supposedly doing something.

No one can check the validity of your claim. It could as well be, that the person stole your girlfriend, and you are just trying to publicly shame him in whatever way. So don't call out Gamertags in the forum, please.

I also had the same Gamer tag attack me. hopefully this will be fixed soon. I pay for xbox live and feel something should be done in this matter. Isn't that what I pay for?

Arminatorx I apologize for the gamertag issue. I HAVE blocked/reported the player. Quote: "I reported him for tampering and listed him ad an avoided player." I have not ALLOWED him anything that you describe. I mentioned this in my above post. I am just
looking for a solution to this so I can enjoy the xbox service that I pay for.

Quote: "I reported him for tampering and listed him ad an avoided player."
Sorry if I explained it confusingly.

Listing him as an "avoided" player is NOT the same as "blocking" him. When you choose to "avoid" him, Xbox Live will TRY to not match you with that player, but if no better alternatives are available will still do so. And even if he's not in a match with
you, simply having him set as "avoid" will still allow him to view your online presence and what you are doing (unless you turned that off in the profile and privacy settings of yours).

If you really block him, he won't see your online status and what you are doing. So he can't track you down, join a match lobby you're in, can't then find the IP and therefore can't DDoS you.

As long as you "allow" him to find you ("allow" in the sense of "not actively blocking" him, not in the meaning of actively inviting him), he can detect you online, find your IP and DDoS you. This also includes other means of contact outside of Xbox Live,
so if you for example chat with him via Instant Messengers or anything else that could provide him with your public IP address, he can (and probably will try) to DDoS you.

Additionally, DDoS attacks are illegal in most countries. So also contact your local police department and your Internet Service Provider, so they can set up logging for your Internet connection, to collect evidence.

Together with your ISP and the Police you can then press charges against that person. Depending on the severity of the attacks (as recorded by your ISP), your ISP can then demand compensation from the attacker, and depending on the age, might even lead to
an arrest.

However, only you, your ISP and the police can do that. Microsoft and this forum here can't help you with that issue. See also my next post in response to Gweedos.
Microsoft can't fix that.

You are paying for using the Multiplayer and other Gold Member features of the Live service. It's like paying for a trainride or a bus commute for example.

However, if a person deliberately crashes his car into the bus or blocks a railroad crossing with a truck, you can't make the bus or train company responsible for your interrupted travels.

The same is true with Xbox Live. Xbox Live uses the public Internet just like buses and trains use public road and track infrastructure.

Even if you turn off your Xbox and sell it and don't use Live at all, if the person sees you via some other service and can get your public IP that way, they can still DDoS you completely independant of Live. Even if the person gets banned from Xbox Live,
he is still able to DDoS you.

Therefore, no matter how much you pay for Xbox Live, Microsoft can't do anything about that person.

As I wrote in the previous post: DDoS Attacks are illegal in most countries. So contact your Internet Provider and ask them to log your connection, so they can collect evidence against the DDoS attacker. Then go to your Police station and press charges together
with your ISP.

While Microsoft can "only" ban his Gamertag from accessing Live (and he can simply create a new one), pressing real legal charges against the attacker will result in monetary compensation and possibly an arrest of the attacker.

So don't try to ask Microsoft for help, as it won't help you. It makes as much sense as asking Virgin Airlines for a turkey dinner and to eradicate terrorism, because you couldn't visit your parents during Thanksgiving after terrorists blew up the plane
you were trying to get, despite you having bought a ticket for that flight.

I'm sorry to have to ask this, but how exactly do you "block" someone on the xbox 360? I don't remember ever seeing that option.

Thanks in advance...

Bring up the offending gamertag, choose "Mute" at the bottom, and then "Block Communications".

Additionally, in your profile's privacy settings, set as much as possible to be visible to your friends only. And of course, make sure the offending gamertag is also not on your friend list anymore.

Yesterday, I got booted off by someone while I was playing BO2. After getting back on, I was told to report him, so I got more info. I sent a message and he actually sent a message back saying He did boot me off, and he didnt mean to. But If I keep talking
he'll boot me off. I sent a message back saying "GG you DoS attack :)" and got booted off. Heres the proof :

I DID contact an administrator about this, and it was then that I was told to Block him and Report.

Arminator, I don't know where you are getting all your information from, but I had blocked this guy the same way you described. He just got into game with me and sent me a bunch of threats. He's not on my friends list, he's muted, reported, and marked as
an avoided player. Furthermore, maybe you could clear this up for me. Are you telling me that Microsoft couldn't release a patch to prevent these "Booters" from retrieving a players IP? Somehow I think that if this were happening to xbox one players there
would a patch released within a week, just sayin.
