don't let me connect to xbox live

you should also reset your router by switching it off and unplugging the power from the wall socket for 5 minutes.

allow the router to fully initialise after powering up before trying to connect the Xbox to the network.

if possible, try using an ethernet cable to connect the Xbox so that you can rule out problems with your ISP.

if you still have problems with an ethernet cable then you may need to contact your ISP to see if they are having issues.

Go ahead and perform a hard reset and power cycle of
your console. Hold down the power button on the console for about 10 seconds until it shuts down and then remove the power cable from the Xbox and the power outlet for about 5 minutes. Then re-connect and turn on the Xbox.

Next I would suggest, If you haven't already done so, go ahead and try performing a Soft console Factory
reset on your console by doing the following:

1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select All Settings.
4. Select System.
5. Select Console info & updates.
6. Select Reset console. [KEEP MY GAMES AND APPS]

Make sure you have both your email and password on hand as you will be asked to sign back in. There is an option to delete everything and to save your games and apps; choose the latter. This will
reset the Operating system [OS] of the console and allow you a fresh start-up.

Let me guess, your xbox is not connected to the internet nor xbox live??? If you don't have the patches, then you must not be connected to xbox live. Because the patches are automatic. Like when you start the game, the patch it ask you install the patch
or it will kick you off xbox live if you don't download and install it.

im not sure what had happened but i am now connected to xbox live. It must have been a connection error or something.
