    Dolby Surround on HDMI?

Okay, so Dolby 5.1 surround is working fine with the optical out. Thanks!

But, when I tried hdmi audio out, I only got 2 channel Dolby. I have it set to bitstream, and Dolby selected, but no surround through hdmi. The uncompressed audio has never worked right with my system, so I can't use uncompressed 5.1. Is this a known issue?

    :)

  2. Still no Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround after update

Dolby Digital is surround sound. There is a separate option for stereo audio on the optical output. I can definitely tell a difference between stereo and surround with my A40s, and the bitstream Dolby Digital is definitely surround.

Optical Out with No Surround Sound

to ICESTORM#: Regarding Dolby Surround Sound: MY CABLE BOX USES DOLBY SURROUND SOUND, IT IS ADVERTISED ON EVERY MOVIE I RENT OR WATCH. MY XBOX ONE HAS TO USE A SILLY BETA APP TO GET SURROUND SOUND THROUGH HDMI OUT BUT CAN NOT GET IT FOR THE OPTICAL OUT
    PORT.

    Dolby Surround on HDMI?

Sad to say that this is still an issue 3 years later. I have a Dolby ProLogic receiver with the XBox One S connected to it via HDMI. When I try to play movies in Apps like YouTube TV the sound is horrible... flat, tinny, and only 2 speakers. I have tried
every surround sound option on the Xbox including bitstream and nothing is recognized by the receiver as surround sound. In contrast, I also have a Chromecast and it properly sends full, rich 5.1 surround sound over HDMI to the SAME RECEIVER. I was going
to use the Xbox as the centerpiece of my home theater, but this is a deal killer. It's beyond ridiculous that a $300 Xbox can't do what a $35 Chromecast can do.

    HDMI vs optical digital audio.

    Hey there,

HDMI has a much higher audio bandwidth than optical. HDMI is capable of transmitting uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1 surround, basically sending the sound for each speaker separately. Optical however can only deliver compressed surround, so basically the console
has to compress the audio, then the receiver will have to decompress it the other end.

So if you have the option, use HDMI and set your console to uncompressed 5.1/7.1 rather than Dolby or DTS and Dolby and DTS are both compression methods for surround.
