Dolby Atmos on the Xbox One S console

I was considering getting the Xbox One S console until yesterday, when I learned, that it does not support the Dolby Atmos. Does anyone know, if there are any current plans of updating the system allowing the support of beatstream in the near future?

Labyrinth 4K Atmos Bluray - Dolby Atmos not working with Xbox One S

I cannot get the Xbox One S to output Dolby Atmos to my receiver for this bluray.

The Dolby Atmos app samples on Xbox One work fine and receiver outputs Atmos.

This bluray only outputs Dolby TrueHD (not Atmos). Xbox set to Bitstream passthrough to Yamaha receiver and Atmos setting to home theater enabled but only TrueHD output.

Any ideas?

I seriously doubt that will be supported. Sound isn't something you just patch with software, it requires decoders and DACs which is also hardware related.

I'd assume they went with HDR10 for a reason as even Sony skipped the Dolby Atmos support.

HDR10 is a video spec. Dolby Vision would be the equivalent video spec. Atmos is an encoding in the audio stream that the receiver would decode. (similar to how Pro Logic worked a long time ago). The reason is doesn't work on the xbox is the xbox decodes
and sends uncompressed audio to the receiver. For Atmos to work correctly it would need to send the Atmos encoded bitstream to the receiver. This is the crux, they could support this feature on 4k Blu-rays and other video sources, but the audio would have
to be preencoded with it and the xbox would have to bypass it's internal decoder. The issue with that is that you then lose the mixer, meaning that they cannot add other audio sounds into the stream (like notifications sounds etc.). Ultimately you will probably
never see a game utilize Atmos, but they may add support for movies.

Personal opinion, Atmos will be dead in a few years. These crazy niche audio schemes never hang around. DTS and Dolby try new ones every few years, but they never really work for the average consumer. Atmos requires additional speakers or specially purchased
ones and the vast majority of people don't even have 5.1, and those that do don't generally want to replace/upgrade there speakers that often.

I can confirm this bug with the Dolby Atmos app.

My setup: Denon X4200W receiver with Xbox One S.

Atmos works fine in the Dolby Atmos app, Blu-Ray and Netflix (the movie Okja is the only Atmos movie on Netflix). All other Netflix videos and Xbox apps default back to 2.0 down mix as posted above.

This is Xbox One specific, and relates to how Dolby Atmos capabilities via Home Cinema amps. They have been compromised by the fact that the Dolby Atmos app version has not kept up with the firmware of numerous current amps from multiple brands.

Since August, it changed from outputting Atmos signals as "Atmos" to to generic "multi Ch in".

Like many others, I mailed Denon, and it is an issue relating to the MAT container embedded in the Dolby Atmos app. We collectively need a definitive answer on when Microsoft and/or Dolby intends to upgrade to 1.6?

The full quite of the Denon explanation is below:

"Dolby Atmos version is changed from “Dolby Harmony 1.3” to “Dolby Home Audio 1.6” via U21 Update. The Dolby Home Audio 1.6 includes the “Dolby MAT signaling” feature that detecting the channel based PCM signal contained into the Dolby MAT Container.
And, major player which contains the PCM signal into Dolby MAT container is only XBOX One S and XBOX One X, currently. With new Dolby Atmos version 1.6, specific processing of source (XBOX) is needed. This is now the problem: Xbox did not implement this processing

*maybe* this "problem" is exactly how the Dolby Atmos App on Xbox One X works.

Dolby Atmos native content? perfect! Dolby Atmos playback.

No Dolby Atmos? the App upmix current audio track to Dolby Atmos (the headphones features works in this way).

I don't know if is intentional.
