1. Does xbox one interpolate/blend/dissolve between frames?

My new Xbox one gets quite blurry when the frame rate dips a bit. It looks like the individual frames are being dissolved between one another. If you have ever used frame interpolation/blending in a video editor it looks like that. A bit like the "trails"
effect from the old GTA games.

Is this just how it is supposed to work? I can't find any information about it online. Is it something you can turn off? Is something wrong with my Xbox one?

I tried plugging the hdmi cable into my xbox 360 to see if there is some setting on my tv causing it, it worked fine. I have assassin's creed 4 on both systems and the difference is clear. On xbox 360 every frame is displayed clearly even when the frame
rate dips, but on xbox one when the frame rate dips even a little bit you can see the frames overlap each other. Maybe it is to make the frame rate look smoother?

It is a Australian Xbox one if that makes a difference. Games I have and noticed it on include Sunset Overdrive (when things get hectic), Assassin's Creed 4 (most of the time), Alien Isolation (oddly it doesn't seem to be present at all during cutscenes)

If it is supposed to work that way that's fine, I'm not mad just disappointed, I usually look past low frame rates but this effect makes me notice them every time it gets a bit choppy.

I'll be really happy if I can fix it though.

    :)

Touche. Any day now the entire argument between the consoles is going to dissolve to both sides pretty much belting out; "Your Mom!" "No, YOUR mom!" "Noooo, YOUR MOM." "YOURMOMCLOUD." "YOURMOMKRATOS."

    Borderlands 2 Judder

If the judder only happens during fast motion, it's probably a limitation in the MCFI (Motion Compensated Frame Interpolation) motion estimation. It has to search and match parts of each frame against one or more successive frames to establish the direction
of motion, and this is done within a limited area.

Anything that moves too fast, and thus a greater distance between frames than the MCFI's motion estimation searches across, will force the TV to temporarily revert from MCFI to simple frame repetition or blending.

I'm not sure if there is a consumer level MCFI system yet that can handle fast moving games respectably.

    Always 60hz on 120HZ TV?

Older TV's that have a '120Hz mode' are generally not true 120Hz displays. They do this by using a technique called frame interpolation. Frame interpolation is a process of inserting artificial frames between the original frames of a video signal. This creates the illusion of a smoother, more fluid image.

Frame interpolation works by analysing the motion of the previous and next frames in a video signal. The TV then uses this information to create a new frame that is halfway between the two original frames. This new frame is then inserted into the video signal, creating the illusion of a higher frame rate.

This is only useful when watching certain TV broadcast content such as sport as the image may appear more smooth and possibly less blurred. However, it can, and often does, include artifacts. And, when the action is too fast, additional blurring and even ghosting can affect the output.

You should not enable any TV post processing when playing games as this will cause severe input lag. It won't feel smooth at all.

There are no 120Hz games on Xbox One S. The 120Hz option was added as this is part of the feature set of the Variable Refresh rate technology feature added in around 2018. VRR syncs the display refresh rate with the game frame rate on compatible displays. This can prevent screen tearing.

    Best settings for Plasma TV?
So less compensation will help with picture quality?
In-game, you don't want motion compensation/motion flow/motion anything. For movies and TV, those settings create interpolated frames in between the ones that are received by
the TV. Doing that adds latency because the TV has to queue up a few frames from the video source, examine them to build in-between frames to "smooth" the video, then it has to display those frames. The queueing process introduces latency. In a game, you don't
want the TV trying to generate frames out of thin air to fit between the ones received from the 360.

Xbox one series X Frame Interpolation

This is already built into your TV.

Real time frame interpolation is absolute garbage, and soon filmmakers eill be able to disable it. No, not even the Xbox has the power to so it properly, and even then it would look awful. Professional suites for this purpose use extremely powerful computers
and multiple passes and manual adjustments to get it right.

Xbox one series X Frame Interpolation

    Hi,

I‘m aware that this is already implemented in TV. But I‘m owning an Epson 9400 (5050) but the frame interpolation on that device is not working properly. So with the power of the xbox maybe that could be an advantage.
