Does the XB1 make a noise when accessing the HDD?

Hi All,

I received an XBONE for Christmas (purchased in November). However, I've noticed the device making an noise when accessing the HDD (which is quite a lot considering the majority of games come as a download). It doesn't really make the noise when in the dashboard,
and with the volume up, it is almost not noticeable. However, when the TV is muted you can clearly hear the HDD being accessed (especially during intensive passages of play).

I would not normally be bothered, as it is like a computer afterall, and the external hard drives I use on my computers make similar sounds. But I've been told that the xbox should be silent - not even hard drive access noises.

Here is an upload of my xbox making the sound - . The camera is up close to the box so you can get a decent listen.

Any advice is appreciated.

Xbox still having static noise issue!

Can you address the static noise because I hear a sound like hard disk accessing after the update. I also hear the coil whine noise when I start or close the console.

No. Mine does not make that noise. It does make a little noise while it's running, but not the chopping noise I heard in your video.

It's really, really hard to tell on a video. I turned the volume up pretty loud and it just sounds like a hard drive accessing files. It doesn't sound like anything is wrong, but you'd be better able to tell by yourself comparing your console with another
Xbox One in person.

Thanks for the reply. I've compared it to broken ones on YouTube and it is nowhere near as loud. I am just curious if other people notice their xboz accessing the HDD or not? I would have assumed the noise is normal, but it seems to be accessing it an awful
lot. If you sit next to it on mute you can hear it a lot (not loud), if you sit back with the volume on it isn't noticeable.

Do your XBOne's sound like they're accessing the hard drive often? Or are they deadly silent during gameplay?

It does take a while to cold start it up, and shutdown. I normally just cut power to it, but then again, it makes a harsh kind of HDD noise when I do it (a short noise just like what happens when you turn off your laptop by holding down the power button
for more than 4 seconds).

It does have 3 operating systems, and a 500GB HDD which is only a 5400rpm one. But it does have a good processor an AMD 8 core Jaguar APU. It's probably doing silent updates when you press the power button you think it's shutdown but to make sure it IS shutdown,
just cut power to it.

I also tested if it was my usb ports that result in the noise but when I hooked up the controller it didn’t make the noise I think it’s just the hdd that’s causing the issue.

That really quiet ticking noise that you can't hear unless you stick your ear on the console? That's not the HDD. HDDs don't make a ticking noise like that.

Does the XB1 make a noise when accessing the HDD?
