Does moving a game from an external hard drive to an xbox take up a lot of internet data?

I need to move a game called Ark: Survival Evolved from my external hard drive to my xbox and I don't want to use up all my internet data doing it so I was wondering if it took up a lot of data like download a game or if it was diiferent then downloading a game.

    :)

Hi, XD! thank you for reaching out.

My name is AJ, I'm an Independent Advisor for the Xbox Community.

Moving games from an external hard drive to your console's storage unit does not consume data and can be done even if your console is not connected to the internet.

Storage Alternatives for XBOX versus internal drive

I've seen a lot of discussions and questions about losing games and data when a XBOX unfortunately crashes and may need replacement. Saved game data is usually lost. An alternative is an external hard drive for your XBOX. I personally use 2 external
hard drives for all of my storage needs versus using the internal hard drive. My first external drive I started with was a Seagate 4TB External Hard drive. It plugs directly into a USB port on the back of my XBOX One X and then I added a Seagate 8TB External
Hard drive. Then I simply went into Settings, then storage then set the 8TB as my default drive with the 4TB as a secondary. This has multiple benefits as you not only have your games and data separate in case of XBOX failure but you can also take the drive
with you to other locations and play the games on another XBOX. :)

In game data loss due to Microsoft remotely forced my external storage device to disconnect without warning!

I'm Samy an independent advisor. Welcome to the Xbox community. How are you?

No, Microsoft has not sent any signals remotely to disconnect your external hard drive. External hard drives are slower than internal hard drives and much slower than SSD and even slower compared to newer SSD's. This happened because there was too much data being used too much on the external hard drive and it couldn't hold up either because the game is heavy or because the external hard drive like all things tends to get worse over time until it checks out at the end of its useful life. To prevent this from happening again, graphically leave heavier games in the console's internal memory and move lighter games to the external hard drive.

Preventing Save Data From Being Corrupted

Hello! After losing my game data (more than once) I invested into an external hard drive in order to ensure that I won't lose my game data again. Here is a link to the external hard drive I got but of course you can find cheaper options.

The set up is fairly easier and if you have any troubles there are a lot of YouTube videos that walk you through the set-up process!

    Xbox slim hard drive issues

Hi, you can transfer data from your old hard drive to the new one using the data transfer cable as described in the link below.

    -

    www.xbox.com/.../transfer

    -

As for your question regarding external hard drives, no matter what size hard drive you get you can only use 16GB for your Xbox storage.

    -

You could also use a USB flash drive to transfer your content but as you seem to have a lot to move I would recommend using the data transfer cable. Please ensure that if you do get the data transfer cable that it is a genuine Microsoft certified cable otherwise
you can have all sorts of issues and end up with hard drives that will not work as Xbox hard drives.
