Does an USB formatted in One work with 360?

Hi there!

According to a help article I read, you can format an USB stick to be able to store apps and games. When it's done, it's supposed to enable you to play the games that you transferred to it when you plug it into another Xbox.

If I understood the help article correctly, its supposed to work with any Xbox 360 as well?

The problem is, I formatted an USB stick with an Xbox One, transferred some games from that console and plugged it in my Xbox 360.

However, it doesn't detect it at all as a formatted device with games in it, it only sees it as an unknown unit with all options but "Format" greyed out. I tried connecting and disconnecting several times, tried different USB ports and restarted the Xbox several times as well to no avail.

I also get no popup when plugging in the device, only way I can see it is when I go under settings and then storage.

Is there any way I can solve this?

PS. My account is stored in both consoles, but the Xbox One belongs to my family and the 360 is at my house.

The games in question are from another account that ALSO is stored in both consoles, but as you know the 360 only allows games that were bought by a certain account to be downloaded only by logging into that account, while in One you can download the games purchased by all account from any accounts stored in the console.

In short, Drives formatted for Xbox One only work on Xbox One and Series X|S, they don't work on Xbox 360.

A slightly longer explanation is that the formatting and file system is different. Even if the format and file system were the same, the games downloaded on an Xbox One still wouldn't work on an Xbox 360 as they are actually coded differently. Even the Xbox 360 games wouldn't work as they have been reprogrammed to only work on Xbox One/Series X|S.

If you have your Xbox 360 connected to Xbox Live you will need to download these games and apps directly via that system. It's not possible to transfer them between generations.

After formatting my 32gb usb stick the long way by unchecking the quick format option. It played one movie and on the second one it froze and crashed. The usb stick works fine on 360, ps3 and ps4.

I recommend you format the drive to the 360 or anything that runs NTFS such as the 360 or a Windows PC. The USB ports are working fine its just it probably needed to be formatted to a different device before it can format to the One.

Are you simply using it via the USB. it won't recognize it via SATA (if that's hat you were trying)?

Just an fyi, once it does "see it" and it's Formatted properly by the Xbox 360, it will only be 16Gb Maximum. In short, it's a lot easier to simply use a 16Gb USB Flash Drive. But it won't be recognized as a HDD either. Games and Game Features that require
a HDD will not work with only a USB Storage Connection.

In addition, there is no "Disc" or anything that needs to run by the Xbox 360. It is either a correct Formatted USB Storage Device or not. The Disc mentioned in the Transfer Kit is simply to Move Content from one Storage Device to another, not Format anything.

Are you talking about the 360 or xbox one?

The 360 will only recognise upto 32gb, you certainly wont be able to use the whole 1tb.

Once the drive is formatted to fat32 it still needs to be configured to work on the console.
