Does a parent xbox live gold subscription populate so a child can use it as well?

So, I have my own xbox account. My son has his xbox live account. He is listed as a child under me. If I sign up for an xbox live gold subscription ( I currently do not have one, nor does he), will he get access to xbox gold subscription as well with child
restrictions? Or, do I need to get a code and turn on xbox live for him and me separately?

You can create a child account and link it to your account as a parent account. This can be very beneficial as you can set rules and limitations for your child so that they require your permission to do things like accept friend requests or change account
info.

Please note that a gold account would have to be purchased for the child account. If the parent account has gold it does not filter down. The parent account does not require a gold account unless the parent wants to do live chat, play multiplayer or use
apps like netflix.

 

Moving from Xbox 360 to Xbox One and Family Sharing

As the family sharing option on the Xbox one is a little bit different to the option on the 360 it is definitely recommended the way you describe it. Set up the adult account and get it a gold subscription. Then set up the child account(s) and add them
to the family and all the family associated accounts are able to use the gold subscription as well as all the digital purchases of the parent/adult account. And of course you can also add another parent/adult account, too.

Only getting a gold subscription for the child account only works for the specific child account and will not be valid for the adult or other family associated accounts.

 

I have the same problem, except that I have already bought a subscription, and my kid does not inherit it. I may be doing something wrong.

So you have an xbox gold account and the subscription is not active for your child? Bummer. Documentation I read seemed to hint this is what would happen.

Surely we aren't the only ones with this question.

 

If you're using a 360, you would need a subscription on each account.

If you're using the One, you can set the console as your Home console and any other accounts on that console can share your gold.
