@ Ummm.... Yes I can. The 24 hour check-in was an authentication process for your licenses. Trading the game in to participating retailers would rip that license from your console library. Now its back in circulation to be used by the next person.

-

Its really common sense but I've found that to be severely lacking in this day and age.
So I bring my game and code to Gamestop, they deactivate the code and keep my disc and code to be resold? I can already do that without the "ripping" part and I can even sell it on Ebay if I don't want the 7 dollar trade in credit Gamestop would have given
me. I'm not seeing the upside to this.

How would the code have been deactivated if I had chosen to sell the game? or if I wanted to give the game to a friend? Gamefly going to rent games and have to activate/deactivate the code for each rental?

:)

2. Xbox One Region Locked: Xbox One Will Not Work Outside Of 21 Launch Countries
Hasn't Microsoft clearly stated that Xbox One is NOT region locked or have they reversed that policy?
The Xbox One is NOT region-locked & that position never has been & likely never will be reversed.

DEVS take on NOT always online

I'm curious, what exactly did they have to change after finding out Microsoft reversed the console's always online policy, even though the game is still always online?

You're not seeing the upside because your a consumer. Lol. Microsoft originally said your could trade in "their" games to authorized retailers (Never mentioned which.), and "enabled" other publishers to do so; maybe E.A., Ubisoft, Activision, 2K, etc., wouldn't
have taken M.S. up on their generous offer to be "enabled". Lol.

>

24 hour check-in? My guess is M.S. wanted that to monitor peoples gaming/viewing habits for marketing purposes just as much as checking for a valid license; remember the Kinect couldn't be turned off or unplugged at first.

>

Give the game to a friend? I'm sure everyone remembers that M.S. first stated you could give it to someone on your friends list, provided they were on it for 30 days, once. Meaning the game died with the person you gifted it to.

>

I believe all the argument is about the "Family Share Plan" that was never explained or, in my opinion, was NEVER going to happen. If it was REALLY "Buy One Get 9 FREE!", my friends and I already had a "club" to share games. Lol.

>

It just blows my mind that there is so many people willing to give up rights just because some company made a blurb of something that MAY/COULD/POSSIBLY come to be. I'll quote Burst Axe, "Its really common sense but I've found that to be severely lacking
in this day and age.". Lol.

>

If any company wants to push a new idea, they should actually have the idea worked out and be able to explain it.

@ 24 hour check-in allowed:

Resale of disc based games

No longer needing the disc when playing on the console

Family Share
How did that enable any of those things. Each and every one of them could have been done with a similar system to what I described. You don't need a 24 hour check-in, you need a unique code.

A unique code means that when reselling the game your code is deactivated. A unique code would tell your console that you don't need a disc to play. A unique code allows only a certain number of people to play the game,

I used Mass Effect 1 of an example of how a unique code can enable 'family' sharing of a game without the requirement of a 24 hour check-in. Not the exact way it should have been done.

All a 24 hour check-in would have done is making sure the pirates aren't abusing the system and the pirates wouldn't have had to go through it anyway.

@voteDC. A unique code would work in theory. The problem arises with code generators and people trying to activate their game and getting something along the lines of, "This code has already been redeemed." . I do like the idea in principle though.

>

I would rather have a disc with a embedded code. Sure it would add a little to the price, but I think it would be more foolproof.

Here is a link for a Sony patent on a RFID tag in the disc. I thought it was interesting.

though.
In all the time the 360 has been out there hasn't been a working code generator made for any of the items on the system (Gold, Games, DLC, etc). So it is very unlikely that such things would be made for the One.

It's as I've said before, you need to add a value to the DRM to make the customer 'support' it.

The 24 hour check-in added no value to the consumer.

@voteDC. A quick Bing of code generators for Live and Points seems to pull up a plethora of hits; whether they work or not is another story. Seems plausible though. If you are indeed right that no "working code generator" has been made for the 360, I'm all
for your idea. I could also live with a chipped disc. I also agree with you that the 24 hour check-in added no value to the consumer.

9. I don't even know how they can get Family Sharing to work when so many titles are exempt on Steam's. All those Assassin Creed games? Nope, none of them can be shared. but Ubisoft must obviously support because it's on there!

10. The only logical way i could see of them allowing a Shared Library of games, is once the game got too old, and lost the main revenue that it's original release gave.

-

So say a game gets 6-9 months old. That's about old enough to have lost a lot of new sales. But it's also about time that DLC content flags. So they allow Family Share on that game, and the DLC is still standard price. It would technically be no different
from another system i cannot mention, just less people taking up on the offer, as not everybody would be able to family share.

-

Also may i point out. That the Gifting/Trading/selling of physical based media, is set out in Law, and not the province of some company to say when and where and to whom it can be done. That is for the Law-makers to decide. Microsoft were not allowing you
to do something on the old system, In fact they had stripped your rights away from you with the old system. And that was another sticking point for a lot of people, especially older people who have fought for years to preserve rights that make things better
for people and not worse. (All Union Members and Reps will know what i am talking about). All of the things i stated, have been laid out in Law for years.

-

Everyone should be shocked that they were trying to circumvent your rights.

ThreeDog, Do you even know what you are talking about. The UK, has some of the best broadband packages in the world, in fact better than a lot of America's ISP, where America seems to get ripped off. Where can you get unlimited Broadband for $4.95 plus line
rental of $25. (Line rental allows home phone)

Compare the Best Broadband Packages - uSwitch

-

Here you go

-

Virgin broadband 30Mb Unlimited Fibre Optic - £15.99 ($26.46) Plus Line rental a month - Broadband and Phone Deals & Packages

Virgin broadband 120Mb Unlimited Fibre Optic - £15.99 ($46.34) Plus Line rental a month

Sky Fibre Broadband 38Mb Unlimted - £20.00 plus line rental ($33.10) Plus Line rental - Sky Broadband - Broadband Deals & Fibre Broadband Deals | Sky.com

TalkTalk Broadband - Phone Line - Unlimited - £2.99 ($4.95) Plus Line Rental. (Yes those figures are correct) - TalkTalk

-

Yes Line rental is needed in the UK, but that is for the Home phone anyway. So it does not matter who you are with, you need Line Rental.

-

Blame EU if you want, as i do not know their limits, as it varies from country to country.

15. But Pyramid, is it still a fallacy when it was intended..?

.

What a lot of people who have this hatred against DRM don't seem to realize, is that we've all been living and using DRM for decades. Disc-based media IS a version of DRM, which obviously can be circumvented in ways similar to the little "story" in my last
post. We as consumers when purchasing video games, movies or etc, are merely purchasing the right to use that content for ourselves as long as we have possession of the disc. We are NOT purchasing the content itself, which FAR TOO MANY consumers misconstrue
about what rights we should and shouldn't have as consumers regarding such media.
