For the Console? No. For certain games? yes. It just depends on the game you want to play.

Short answer no, Xbox Live Gold is a paid subscription to access online multiplayer functions so it is not needed to own a console. To add a bit more clarity what is needed is a connection to the internet since the console will ask for an initial update.

Hi there, as others have said, you don't need gold. However there are some games that do require gold to play, so make sure you check that before purchasing a game, and you will need gold if you wish to play online.
