Do you need gold to play the campaign for destiny?

Destiny is a MMO, which means you have to have Gold, yes. The campaign can be solo, but some missions require you have the 3 in the group.

 

Okay, what is matchmaking supposed to be? Is that supposed to be like some kind of multiplayer deathmatch?

 

Silver works for campaign missions. Gold is required for Strike missions, Raids and the Crucible (competitive multiplayer). So you can do the campaign with Silver, but you lose a considerable chunk of the game without a Gold membership.

 

Darn you Frog, you mean a played a hour on my wife's silver account for research purposes only to find out I wasted my time.

 

Some levels require Gold Membership just like you need a fireteam to do certain missions with. I'm sure you can play this with silver membership account.

 

Destiny requires an xbox live connection. The whole thing about the xbox live gold required means you cant play those strikes/pvp/raids if you are running on a gold trial membership. You cannot play the game with a silver membership.

 

i tested this and yes you need internet connection, however if you have xbox live silver you can still play the story and free roam. you will be able to see and play with other gaurdians. silver lets you have access to all but the strikes and competetive
multiplayer. i know this because my sister has xbox live silver on the 360 and she was able to do pretty much everything. people were ag the tower, sessions were full she just couldnt do any strikes or cruicible. so thats why it says coop without xbox live

Short answer: No, you do not need XBL Gold to play the "Single Player" portion of the game.

I just got Destiny today & have completed the intro / "tutorial" mission, arrived at "the City", geared up, & am playing what appears to be the first "real" mission of the SP campaign; all while being Silver.

I didn't fully explore "the City" & have only just started playing but so far I haven't come across any problems. Maybe those of us for whom this is / was a concern can spread the word, cuz I
sure couldn't find
anything online that explicitly clarified / differentiated "online only" with XBL Gold and/or Silver.

According to the box it says "certain destiny gameplay and functionality requires a subscription to xbox live gold" it does not say anywhere that the game is online only - so I'm quite frustrated to find out that I have no option to play offline without
seeing other players in my game. Just a note, I'm an XBL Gold member, but my gold membership was to get access to apps (netflix etc) and for the free montly games - not to play online. I might have to try the game with the internet connection physically off
and see if this works.

Which is why I'm gonna break it down to you all so everyone will know.

Destiny is a MMOFPS (massively multiplayer online first-person shooter) game which will require Internet connection to play the game fully. You cannot play DESTINY offine, because this game has more than 50+ Players in one game server. (Example: 72 players
in one map)

In terms of Game modes such as Campaign, Strikes and PVP. Some of the game modes will require an Xbox LIVE Gold Membership to play certain modes. Here is the list where you can play or not play depending on your membership.

Yes you need gold Membership to play destiny you cane buy it for 20 dollars for 3 month its not that expensive or for a year for 60.

 

Since no one here has ever had a silver profile apparently i can answer this with 100% more accuracy. You dont need gold to play destiny. Nope, not at all. Silver profiles give you access to all story missions and patrols. You cannot coop locally. While
on patrol you can play with others indirectly who happen to be in the area. Similarily, the starting area (tower) will also have other players. You can complete daily story missions for legendary marks even. (Got spindle like this lol)

Theoretically its possible to play with a friend in patrol but its more of a luck thing. Ive had it happen several times where a friend with gold was patrolling the same area and we met up and 'played' together.

Lastly its actually not that boring or lacking either. You can still get maxed out for the most part youll just be missing the raids which get boring anyways and the strikes which get boring anyways and the pvp which lags to high heaven and also gets boring
anyways. I get xbl every other 3 months to keep myself active, and i find the periods of having silver are exactly as fun as having gold in destiny.

P.S. If you get the dlcs you will hit a wall during the Dark Below requiring you to complete the omnigul strike (which you cant) im not sure about House of Wolves, but Taken King is complete.
