Yes, you can use a debit card. That's what I use. If it's a free game with gold and you have an active gold membership, they will not charge you.

To download It You must have a credit/debit card in your Microsoft Account, the credit/debit card will appear when You are going to buy but you are gonna be charged If You have Live Gold.

You can purchase xbox live gold and game pass with account balance but you should also attach a debit/credit card for payment backup cards won't be charged

I cant remove my expired debit card from my xbox account because of pending charges. Everything on my billing history is complete, i have turned off auto renewal for both xbox live gold and EA access and I've done the same for a related account. I removed
the debit card from the related account and added a new debit card but i cant do the same for my account
