    I bought the old xbox one controller with the large bulky wireless adapter from maybe 2017 as seen in this image

    My controller is of the version where it does have a headphone jack but no share button like the xbox series controllers have.

    Can I use it with the new smaller wireless adapter made for the series x controllers?

    What wireless adapter is needed to connect xbox elite controller to windows 10?

    That adapter will WORK with the Elite controller.

    When I got my Oculus Rift, the set included the older model of the Xbox Wireless USB Adapter with a Xbox controller, and my Elite Controller works on my Windows 10 PC with that adapter.

    The newer version is simply a bit smaller.

    So you do NOT need a special "Elite" wireless adapter (which doesn't exist).

    - There was 3 versions of the controller right ? Does they all work on w7 (x64) ?

    They will all work, but only with a wired connection. Bluetooth is not supported for Windows 7 nor is the Wireless adapter for the Xbox One controller unfortunately.

    - Can we play wireless on w7 or it just works with the wire ? Heard that you could play wireless with the
    OLD microsoft wireless adaptator (the usb key for xbox controller) but not the new adaptator wich is specific to windows 10.

    See previous answer. As for an older Adapter, I'm not aware of such a device. I'm pretty sure all adapters only support Windows 10.

    - Would like to buy the RED xbox one controller, does it have a software difference with classic xbox one controller and for some reasons it only work on w10 or it's just a color change ?

    All Xbox One controllers will work with Windows 10, but only via a wired connection.

    Windows 10 + Wireless XBox360 controller + Final Fantasy XIV

    I upgraded to an XBox One controller and used BT instead of the wireless adapter and that solved the issue.

    Thanks for you input! I can play my favorite game again.
    Recently Bluetooth 5 has been published and I noticed that with a mobile Wi-Fi card I bought for upgrading an old laptop. Had to fix the coax connectors as the new NGFF type are smaller than the old style.

    Thanks Chirs. I followed the two methods shown below to pair the Elite Wireless Controller. However, it does not show up under Windows 10. What shall I do? By "push the button on the Xbox Wireless Adapter", do they mean pressing the end of the usb adpater?
    My adapter is the smaller black version.
