Do i need to purchase minecraft twice?

So the goal was to start playing Minecraft with my son. He's seen a lot about it and is interested in building stuff. I've never played so I thought I would dive in and get a feel for the game so I could help him too, I purchased it through the store via
my windows 10 pc ($30). I was prompted to 'sync' purchase through my xbox live account, I pay the gold subscription, not sure if that is relevant or not. Questions:

1- Can I not download the game on my xbox since I've already purchased it in the store? I may be confused on the purpose of the cross platform

2- If no on #1, that means i'll have to buy it a second time through the xbox won't I? ($20)

3- Ok I have to buy again to get it on the xbox, since its already on my windows 10 will we be able to play in the same world at all? or is that the $7.99 / month "realms" subscription added on top of all this?

4-Don't people build their own Minecraft servers to host a world? This is really just for me and the boy to learn to play so it wouldn't be open to the world and I probably have the equipment to do so.

    thank you.

    :)

You need to purchase Minecraft on the console also. Minecraft is not a playanywhere title which allows you to pay once and play on PC and console.

Once you have purchased Minecraft on the console you would need to add your sons account as a friend and then you can invite him to a game or vice versa.

The realms subscription is not required unless youu want to host a persistent world that you or your son can join aty any time

Thank you for both replies. One thing that confuses me as you both state I need to set one xbox as home...… I only have one xbox, the other device is PC. So to play together set the xbox as the 'home' even though its the only one in the house? then
"join" that from the win 10 pc.

    does that make sense?

You can share games and subscriptions with family members or friends using the home Xbox feature. The link explaining that is here

The minute you add another console and play simultaneously you both need your own subscriptions and copy of the game. The home Xbox feature only shares stuff on one console. Your designated home Xbox console.

Cross play is for specific games like Fortnite and Minecraft. The feature isn't meant to share games it's to be able to play games together on different consoles and devices. Regardless of them being from different manufacturers.

It sounds like all you need to do is be designated as the home Xbox and then have your son play on the console. While you play on the PC. That would be the best way to play together with the one copy.

You will need to own a copy on both devices to be able to play together.

Windows 10 will only work on PC as it is not a play anywhere title.

Xbox one will need to have the bedrock edition of the game to be able to play crossplay with Mobile, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

So the Windows 10 PC version of Minecraft is a separate "license" from the version on the console. In other words, yes, you will need to purchase the game twice if you want to play it on console and you want to play on PC (there is actually about 7 versions,
there is also Android, iOS, Kindle, Gear VR, and Nintendo Switch). All of the versions can play on-line together. But each version requires a separate purchase to use.

Once you have the game loaded, the second tab is for "join". As long as you are friends with your son's profile on xbox, if one of you has a world launched, the other account should see the ability to "join" from the menu. See below
