Your son would need a Gold subscription in order to play online.

Game Pass Ultimate includes Gold but also included Game Pass for console and Game Pass for PC. Game Pass is kind of like Netflix for games. It gives you access to a library of games to play. Unless he's playing other games from there, he would really only
need just a Gold subscription.

Does your son have an Xbox Live subscription to allow their account to play online? Call of Duty Warzone is a free to play game that does not require a subscription, but the standard multiplayer requires an online subscription to play.

Anyone who needs proof of hacks in a call of duty game just doesn't play call of duty.

There really are some games that don't require a Game Pass or Live Gold subscription so you can play online, fortnite or Call of Duty Warzone are two examples of games that don't need a subscription to play online, but the vast majority do, Halo, Forza, Gears of War, Battlefield, Fifa, pretty much every paid game, needs Live Gold or Game Pass Ultimate to play online.
