Do I need a controller?

I just purchased a game through Microsoft Store (Cuphead) and it said it's for Xbox and PC but I can't seem to be able to use it, it's stuck on the "press any button" screen. Keyboard doesn't seem to work -- Do I absolutely need a controller? If so, can
I get my money back? I'm using Windows 10 on a Surface 3 Pro.

I played it both on my Xbox with controller and Keyboard with my PC.

You can play this game without a controller. So you don't absolutely need a controller to play.

It is a known issue. You could try to press every single button on the keyboard to get past the start screen and then ensure the control bindings are set to a keyboard.

Hi Th3RealAlice, my name is Joel, I'm here to help you with any problems or questions you may have.

Th3RealAlice, try the following procedure only after checking that the batteries are fully charged or with a new pair of alkaline batteries and that the console is plugged directly into the power outlet, without extension cords or power strips.

You must press the Xbox button on the console for 10-15 seconds (very important) until the console shuts down. Then disconnect from the power socket for 3 - 5 minutes and turn on again.

When finished, try to pair the controller with the console using the corresponding buttons.
