Do beta's take away from games?

I was half and half about buying Destiny, I didn't really like the look of it in recent months and even cancelled My preorder, sinse trying the beta though I have totally changed My mind and have actually preordered it again. Awesome game IMO.

To actually answer the OP. I think it can work both way's, If you aren't to hyped about a game and end up loving the beta then it's kind of a positive. On the other hand, you could end up playing a beta and totally hate the game or feel that you have exhausted
it before you get it.

That is because unlike most of the betas I have ever been in betas like the bf4 one happened so close to launch. They had little time to do any fixes since the game had to go "gold" and then ship. In those instances you need more than 6-8 weeks because
you really do not have that much time. Patches are somewhat different compared to incorporating fixes before finalizing.

And like with Destiny you are only getting a small part of the game. Most betas I used to be in were more robust than these. We tested from pre-Alpha all the way through. Bugs were found in the whole game and fixed. These seem to be more towards testing
servers and stuff. But with getting a smaller amount of content you miss out on the more challenging and deeper content. I personally do not consider these things betas. They are more just testing the servers to make sure they can handle higher amounts
of users. And on day one they will probably have trouble since so many users are trying to play at once. Which is to be expected. And they will have some fixes in place and maybe a patch but most of the bugs will persist at first. Every console beta such
as this I have played has been that way.

 

I enjoy beta's provided the dev gives us an easy way to report bugs or issues. The only real issue I have is exactly what Tzar said, ill informed users thinking that a beta = demo. Then twitter blows up if there's a massive issue.

Overall I'm happy to participate in betas if it helps make a better game on release day.

 

Well, the Destiny beta definitely made me less excited for the final product. It has a very Borderlands feel to it, and I have actual Borderlands coming up for that. It looks great , and I can get behind that, but it feels a bit "me too" toward a franchise
that I already love and will be along in the same time frame.

 

may be a silly question but are beta users required to give feedback on the game so devs know what issues people are running into? Isnt that part of the responsibility of being a tester? If people are only playing to "see what its like" they arent helping
work out the bugs are they? maybe they should be prompted for feedback at the end of every session in order to continue playing the beta.

I only participate in game betas if it's going to be "Free To Play", or if my reward is a free copy of the game when done.

I have to admit I used the destiny beta to establish if I was interested in it, and from that point of view it worked for me.

However I think developers should make betas more of a two way streak, when the ESO betas were out there was a massive survey which you could fill in, IMO it was badly written and done, but I suppose it gave the developers some feedback. I added feedback
to the respawn forums after the titanfall beta but I don't think it mattered, it soon became clear the respawn forums are run by muppets and the developers don't frequent them, so the destiny beta I gave no feedback at all.

However when isn't there a feedback system built into the beta which allows for feedback to be offered so IMO the beta was a fail, although I am sure the developers got the information they wanted.

A beta is party what you make of it and partly what the developers want of it, but after all that its a beta.

 

I was actually excited for it a few months ago, but I think I'm gonna pass on it now. If it was as similar to borderlands as I thought it was going to be then it would be a definite buy. I might pick it up once the price drops a bit.

 

I've never participated in a beta apart from Destiny, I've never really seen the point, especially when I'm 100% on whether I'm buying the game or not.

Though the Destiny beta has shown me that they don't take anything away from the full releases (which I was very worried about), but Destiny went from this game I was wary about and not giving any attention to, to a game which I can hardly wait for.

So if anything, the beta has only made me want to play the full version more and also show me what a great game it is.

 

I personally can't wait to see a whole pile of people buying this game once it launches that were saying:

"After playing the Beta, it's confirmed for me that this game sucks".

What I'm getting at is that SOME people are basing their decision on a BETA... A staged, closed off, pre-baked set of variables and gear that will most likely be far removed from the final product.

But hey... I get that for some people, this style of game isn't for them... It's the other bandwagon jumpers I'm referring to.

This is just my opinion, and I'm not saying anyone in particular is wrong...

This is exactly how I feel after participating in the beta. The game went from a wait and see to a must buy.

 

Not at all betas are fantastic. It is a like a demo but you also get to help out the developer with improving the game. It is a win win kind of thing.
