Disk drive humming/light thumping noise

Humming and thumping sounds that happen only on one disc, usually are a sign of a warped or uneven disc.

Either the DVD was poorly manufactured from the factory to be uneven from the beginning, or because of wrong handling (e.g. pulling the disc off the holder in the cover instead of pushing the holder down and letting the disc pop out by itself) the disc is
slightly warped.

When you put an uneven or warped disc in the drive, the disc will start to vibrate causing the humming or thumping sound when spun at higher speeds during playback.

There is nothing wrong with your console, if only that disc is causing the noise.

the guess of it being the hard drive or a disk in the drive just doesn't make any sense.

The Console is off , i try to turn it on.

Rather then hearing the beep and seeing the green light as the system turns on.

I hear a strange noise , the green light for a second and system does not turn on. , If i try again , the noise might happen , the light will not , and system still stays off.

This can continue for a few minutes , or until i say screw it and leave it alone for 10 minutes and try again.

With further testing , no cd in the drive , no hard drive in the xbox , and switched to using red/white/yellow cables rather then hdmi , still get the noises.

Could you please describe the noise?

Is it a rattling noise like a worn out fan bearing?

Or is it a deep humming sound like a disc spinning in the drive "off center"?

Is it an electronic buzzing or humming?

Is it a "whining" sound like electrical coils chirping?

Depending on the noise it can be different things, and not all can be fixed by yourself.

Unless it's a disc rattling in the drive, there is nothing you can do to fix it yourself, and you need to sign up your console for a (warranty) repair at https://devicesupport.microsoft.com

They don't do damage if it's just a loud humming noise, that's just the drive running at a high speed. As you are not getting any scratches I can say that for sure.

There are two version of hard disc drive for xbox one the old version and the hybrid version. The hybrid version makes less noise and is faster maybe this is what causes your friends to think differently of the humming noise you hear.

Again in my opinion that noise is quite normal.
