Disconnecting from Xbox Live...almost every 2 minutes

Hi,

Recently the University I am going to (living on campus) upgraded the routers in my area. Ever since then, I have been unable to stay connected to Xbox Live and my connection speed has been poor. I have been working with the Network Administrator to fix this
issue, but he and his team are stumped as it is only a problem in my portion of the network.

They are using Aruba networks AP's (an enterprise network setup), and they cannot see in the system when my console disconnects from Xbox Live, as it does not disconnect from the campus network. They tell me that they have fully ported the firewall for
Xbox Live....

We have tried my console in other parts of the network and it has worked just fine, no disconnecting or speed issues.

I did a trace route to see if that would give any useful info, but though I know more than average my area of study is not computer science/networking.

Xbox live keeps disconnecting

I recently got a BT hub but now my Xbox disconnects from live every 2-10 minuets but then almost immediately reconnects again don't know why it keeps disconnecting but it's getting annoying can anyone help

Sorry to hear about the frequent disconnects! Just to check, does this happen when you start playing a game or does it happen at random while you're on the dashboard as well? University networks can be a bit tricky when it comes to getting a solid connection
for Xbox Live and we generally recommend trying a wired connection to avoid disconnections.

When you mentioned that you've tested other parts of the network, do you mean that you've tried other network hardware in their building or you've tested on a different network entirely? If it's with network hardware, that may help narrow down the issue.

The disconnects happen whether I am using a wired connection or a wireless connection, unfortunately.

With the other parts of the network testing, we tested my console on two other parts of the network (two of the dorm network partitions). So yes, I believe the AP's were different from the one installed in my apartment, which is a newer/different model
though still Aruba. The Network administrator has also discussed this with the techs at Aruba, and they are baffled as well. And it isn't just my console.

Oops, misread: the disconnects happen whether I attempt to play a game or just sit there on the dashboard. Like clockwork, at about two minutes I am disconnected.

Have you been able to possibly set up a static IP for your Xbox One? This would be something the network admin would do, but I'm wondering if other devices in your vicinity are being powered on and attempting to share the same IP. It definitely sounds to
be a hardware issue on the side of your network hardware unfortunately.

 

From what I understand of the AP's, they don't have any overlap from apartment to apartment. So the only devices I have connecting are assigned differing IP's within the NAT of the router. Also, they are set up on a moderate to strict NAT.

Bearing that in mind, would setting up a static IP with the (assigned Public IP?) Network Admin improve the disconnects and make the Nat open? Understand I don't know enough about the set up of network policies and categorizing.

This would, of course, not be an issue if xbox's were able to deal with wpa2 peap enterprise credential security... though under normal circumstances that is quite unnecessary!

 

Thanks for clarifying! I was unsure of what your apartment's network setup was like, college networks can be tricky.

Testing a static IP is a step we always like to try and it definitely can't hurt. It's a bit of extra work for your network admin (but luckily that's what they're there for). When you talk to your network admin, if they're able to set up a static IP for
you, have them do it through your Xbox 360 console's MAC address.

To get your Xbox 360 console's MAC address, head on over to Settings > System > Network Settings > Configure Network > Additional Settings > Advanced Settings. There your console's MAC address should be listed. If they're able to set up a static IP for that
MAC address make sure they also set up port forwarding for your console.
