    Disc Read Errors when playing from Hard Drive


    Hi there,

    Recently, I've been getting the "Disc is unreadable" error at specific points during gameplay when playing some games that I've installed to the HDD. If I uninstall the game then it will play with no problems. This makes me assume that there's damaged sectors
    on my HDD which interfere with the games if they happen to be installed on that part of the HDD.

    So, my question is: is there a way to fix this or is it time to get a new HDD before the entire thing dies on me? It's a 360 S console with a 250GB HDD.

    If I do need to get a new HDD, how would I go about transferring the data to a new S HDD? All the transfer cables I've seen appear to be for the old original 360 HDDs only.

    Has anyone had this problem?

    MW3 has disc read errors a lot. I have my copy saved to my hard drive, and I still get disc read errors. Not sure how to fix it.

    Newest console update from Xbox LIVE causing disc read errors?

    Ive recently tried to go back and play Saints Row 3 and Gears of War 3 and im getting open tray and unrecognizable disc errors. I initially thought it was a problem with my hard drive considering it would work without any memory device in the console, but
    when i switched to a new hard drive I was still getting disc read errors. Ive tried clearing my systems cache and erasing any Saints and Gears related content from my console. Ive uninstalled the latest LIVE update and the game runs perfectly fine, but when
    I re-install the update, I get disc read errors again. These discs are almost brand new and have no marks or scratches. Most games work fine, but others are all coming up with disc read errors.

    Disc Read Errors when playing from Hard Drive

    Hi there,

    formatting the hard drive can sometimes fix issues like that too, just be aware that all data will be removed by doing that.

    You can transfer data in a few ways, one is by using a usb flash drive configured for the xbox 360. You can move profiles and save games to that usb drive. The other way would be via the transfer cable.

    See the steps for both ways on this link:

    The link shows a transfer cable for both types of hard drives.

    Installed game still reads from the disc drive.

    Yes i am sure, I INSTALLED the game to the HARD DRIVE, But when i go to play the game it still reads it from the disc and not from my HARD DRIVE. The disc drive is reading the GAME DISC normally from the disc drive, But it should be reading it from my hard
    drive because i have it installed to my HDD. But it dose not, It still reads it from the disc drive. And i played it for like an hour lastnight and and it read it from the disc the whole time. And not from my HDD.

    If clearing the hard drive cache doesn't work as RandyAU93 suggested, then the culprit will may well be a failing hard drive.

    Yes, I know the error message says about the disc being dirty, but please note that the Xbox 360 operating system does not have an error message relating to hard drive read errors. It will always show the disc is dirty or damaged error when failing to read
    a game, regardless of whether the game is a digital download, installed from a disc to the hard drive or running directly via the game DVD.

    The Xbox hard 360 hard drive is a mechanical unit with disc platters and read/write heads. While they can last for years, it's never a case of 'if they will fail', it's 'when'

    If you are playing from an installed copy of the game, I doubt it would be a disc read error on the DVD in the tray. It may be there is a bad sector in the Hard Drive. You can try installing a demo to overwrite that section of the hard drive, then reinstall
    the disc to the hard drive and see if that resolves the issue.

    If the game is on a newer format 360 disc, it will still be reading the disc for 3 minutes after you start the game. If it's at that point you get the error, then it could be a problem with the dvd drive. If it is a game from the older format discs, then
    they play from the hard drive staright away, which means it could be a problem with the hard drive.
