Disc-less play for one but not another?

I know that topic is a little vague sounding, but it's hard to sum up. This will be a legitimate question, but not without some snark.

My friend and I both own Titanfall. I purchased it retail on disc, he got his on-demand through the MS store. On more than a few occasions I've got to play and was given an error saying "do you own this game?" because, duh, I forgot to put the disc in the
drive. However, that friend was over a few nights ago and logged into my machine to play a few other games. After he left, he was still logged in and, to my surprise, Titanfall launched without the disc.

Now, I get the whole disc rights management debate, so telling me I need to disc to play is fine because that's how I chose to purchase it at the time, but how is it that a disc installation and a full download installation are the same 22 gigs? Surely if
I'm being required to insert the disc, there's some sort of content being loaded from it while I play. Is it REALLY just there to prove I bought it? That seems like an incredible waste of HD space if that's the case.

    :)

they could create some complex plan (24 hours or 7 days etc etc) or, they could just not treat thier customers like potential criminals.

    Good idea, bad timing.

Corporations in this era dont trust consumers, and consumers dont trust corporations. So I say leave everything as is. Otherwise you'll get more DRM twisting/turning policies than The Carters (Former 1st family) has liver pills.

Disc-less play for one but not another?

That is exactly the reason. Your friend was able to play the game without the disc in the system simply because he has a digital license for it.

You purchased the disc version so are required to have the disc in the system to prove ownership. The reason that the disc install is the same as the digital install is because the game will run better and faster straight from the hard drive.

As for the reason to have the disc in, look at it this way: You own a software company that has released a very popular game that is going to make you tons of money. Now, here's the catcher, you forget to put the licensing codes on the disc before you
release it and off the copies go to market.

Now, Johnny buys the game and realizes that he doesn't need the disc in the console to play it. So he gives it to a friend of his who does the same thing with his friends. And so on, and so on.

Now, how much money do you think your company has made because of this little oversight? Where you could have sold millions of copies you've maybe sold thousands (or possibly even less). Your company didn't make the money back that they put into the game
and now it has to shut down.

Go the PC game route and require a unique code in each box. This can have the added benefit, just like most PC games, of also then giving you a digital copy of the game.

People get to play disc free and publishers get to kill the used market as they wanted.

Convenience costs, and it isn't always directly cash.

Isn't this somewhat like what MS wanted to do in the 1st place, except that it was every 24 hours rather than 7 days?
