Disc drive spinning while playing digitally downloaded game

Tonight I tried to play my digital copy of Resident Evil Revelations 2 while a Skyrim disc was in the tray, and the disc drive spun up and wouldn't stop. I backed out of the game and tried opening it from my pinned menu (first time was from the Recent menu
in the guide) and it did it again. Tried restarting. Still did it. I started ilomilo instead, and the drive revved momentarily, but then stopped. I don't think it normally does that either, though maybe I just didn't notice it before.

This is a new issue. I played RERev2 with the Skyrim disc in the system last night, and had zero issues. I've played it recently with other discs in as well with no problem. It's just tonight that it's started doing this. And just for confirmation, I did
start up Skyrim (which is installed), and the drive spun up for a bit to make sure the disc was in, and then stopped as it normally does.

The disc drive in my 360 E is loud, that's why I install all my physical games. I don't want to have to completely remove the disc whenever I play a digital game it doesn't work well with on top of that. Tell me somebody's heard of this sort of thing before.

Crackleing sound

So the sound only happens while you're playing games? Is it coming from your ODD (Optical Disc Drive) or does it happen with digitally downloaded games as well? Or is the crackling noise coming through your speakers as if it's coming from the game audio?

Installed game still reads from the disc drive.

The disc should spin up for an initial read. The latest update to the copy protection system also allows the game to perform disc checks while the game is running, however the game disc should not be spinning at 12x constantly.

Compare the sound of the drive spinning when the game is installed to the HDD to the sound of the drive when the game is not installed to the HDD. There should be a difference.

 

Hey there Amedus8,

The Xbox 360 is likely checking to authenticate the game. It's normal for it to check the disc that's in the drive. How long does the game keep spinning for before it stops? Does it happen with any disc you put in the console?

I left it go for over ten minutes tonight and it didn't stop, so I'm assuming it would just keep going.

I tried a couple other things, as well. I tried running RERev2 with different discs in the system, one for a game I have installed, and one for one that I don't. Both had the problem. I also tried putting the disc in after I had already booted RERev2 up
to its main menu, and it still did it that time, as well.

 

Interesting, and is your console standing vertically or lying horizontally? I assume it's connected to Xbox Live as well? Do you have the ability to test this on another console? Either a friend or family members as well?

It's horizontal and connected to Xbox Live. Most of my friends don't have 360s anymore, and those that do don't live close to me.

 

Gotcha, since there isn't another way to try and reproduce the issue on another console it's hard to say if that specific console is the issue or not. If the drive is loud, something could be wrong with the console and a repair would be the next step in
getting that taken care of. It's normal for a disc to spin while in the console since the console is checking and authenticating the disc in the drive, but it could be having a hard time reading the disc and that's why it's still spinning. It's really hard
to say.

So we'd recommend checking in with the chat/phone teams to take a closer look at the warranty status of the console and consider repair options, if it gets to a point that the disc based games aren't launching. You can contact Official Xbox Support through
