Ah, 1080pGate rearing it's ugly and slightly jaggy head again. You know, with cameras, people think they'll get better pictures if they have more megapixels and a bigger lens - turns out that they end up taking the same bad pictures, that's all.

Unfortunately a large quantity of people will always be swayed by numbers, whether it's camera sensor resolution or video game screen resolution. It's a shame, but many people are programmed to respond that way.

Looking back at the release of the previous generation in 2005(ish), social networking was literally in its infancy, fanboys existed, sure, but they didn't have the platforms they (we) have now.

I see a lot of cheap gaming journalism these days - more so since the PS4 and Xbone appeared on the scene than I've ever seen before. So much chatter about frame rates, pixels, memory requirements etc and so little about games. I know this is traditionally
a quiet point in the gaming calendar and these guys and girls have to write to get paid, but really, is this all they can find to write about? Instead of growing positivity in the gaming community this journalism creates negativity and even hatred. We have
to pick sides, we have to believe our side is best. It gets boring quickly, reading the same story over and over, (we know that the PS4 is marginally more powerful already! Get over it!), but unfortunately people believe what they read in print, and what they
are reading is not really about games, it's about statistics. I hate statistics. It's not designed to positively promote gaming or gaming culture. It sucks.

I think I've been writing too long now and should shut up.

It's all about the games. Get the platform that has the games you want to play and forget about the rest.

Yup - the majority of gaming journalism at the moment is an absolute joke, never known it so bad. So many of the major gaming websites relying on click-baiting the fanboys with all this console war BS so they can grab some moolah of those giant screen hijacking
ads that dominate the web these days.

Take me back to the days when all we had was a copy of mean machines to argue over!

tetris is due out on xbox one soon what if its not 1080p 60fps NOOOOOOOOOOOOO, get a grip lad

 

Halo 3 was not even 720p and looked fantastic compared to other titles at the time, as mention by Az, Ryse also looks great and it's only 900p I read, games obviously do not have to be 1080p to look good, I don't care either, give me an ugly looking addictive
game over a pretty looking boring one any day.

 

thankyou all you real xbox fans that means not you haphazard, but you all missed the point I have and msi laptop that plays every game on ultra at 1080p without a hiccup, my point was when announced they said 3d blu ray player and games at 1080p 60 fps even
online, its the lies that get me I bet we could sue Microsoft for faults advertising, and id rather have a wii u than a ps bore

Purps. I'm not lawyer but did they promise it at release? I can't quite remember. Either way, I'm sure it will come soon enough and to be completely honest, I can't wait. Now I don't care much for frames, ratio, native 1080 or what ever it all means. It's
over my head quite frankly. I just can't wait for 1080p to get here so that I don't have to read about how we don't have it. Can a game look great without 1080p? It sure can. Can a game look rubbish at 1080p? It sure can.



If you are after the best graphics then like many have already said, you need to go grab yourself a good computer but I promise you one thing, if all you care about most is graphics and frame rates then you will likely be spending far more on a PC then you
will on a console during its generation life span.



1080p will come to X1. I may be wrong but as far as I am aware, there was never a promise that MS would force developers to make their games at 1080p. Yes there is more to it, but we are still pretty much in the baby steps stage. Give it some time mate.
That's all I can say.

 

The one thing I don't get is people saying "it's early days" and "give it time" (not having a pop at you here Cloud).... Surely the hardware (on both X1 and PS4) should "walk it" when it comes to 1080p and 60fps, even without things being fully optimised....
IF they're so much more powerful than the previous generation.

If the hardware can't cope just yet, then why the heck didn't they throw more under the hood in these machines???

Then there's talk, with the X1, of being able to achieve the desired resolutions/frames by using "tricks" and "shortcuts" for pushing data around and rendering... but if they're having to do that already then it surely doesn't bode well for the future...
I really hope the new SDKs MS are sending (or have sent) out do the job.

 

Too much is made of resolution and fps, good, honest fun and gameplay beats both hands down.

 

@MGF - I have to say, i've just started 'window-shopping' for a new PC as i'll be upgrading mine in April, and i'm just starting to realise how underpowered both machines are compared to some of the hardware out there at the moment. That being said though
there's more than enough 'oomph' in both to be considered next-gen compared to the last generation, just seems like PC hardware is rocketng along at the moment, also, the prices ain't exactly cheap!

The resolution thing doesn't bother me (so long as were not talking sub 720p!) and I know people keep quoting RYSE as an example of what the X1 can do and your probably sick of hearing it, but its enough to convince me of what the X1 can do. I just hope
other devs can utilise the hardware as much as Crytek have and make more of an effort to showcase what it can do.

I dunno..I have no idea about coding a game or how to utilise hardware effectively so maybe the X1 does have some kind of handicap as I keep seeing mentioned, but, despite it only being a few months old i'm becoming sick of 'this-gen' already! the constant
bickering on forums, the console war BS taking precedent on gaming websites, everythings just doing my bleedin' head in! so i'm just gonna pick up my controller and get back to enjoying my games!!

I agree, too much is made of resolutions and frame rates, but then why bother with new generation consoles at all? It's for more power, more grunt and better looking games with better AI, etc....

There is no doubt that the games look and play infinitely better on the One than the 360. If you jump back on the 360 the difference is glaringly obvious, or are you saying there is no improvement Floppy?

 

Got to say I agree with Piztup, gameplay over tech specs, what I do want to see is Microsoft push out some "different" games, I like a good shooter as much as the next person but I want to see a few more innovative things like Project Spark or more Civ/Sim
games, that is where I believe Microsoft could and should shine this gen. And yes before anyone says it I know I should be gaming on a PC but I don't like PC gaming, end of.
