    I want to change my gamer tag to a Japanese name that contains an accented "i" (" ī "), but to do that I need the character " ー " ("KATAKANA-HIRAGANA PROLONGED SOUND MARK"), which is blocked according
    to "https://social.xbox.com/changegamertag" when I confirm with the character in the field.

    "Xbox has expanded the range of possible gamertags and languages," it says. But forgot the important prolonged sound mark.

    Summary:

    Can't use Japanese accent character " ー “ when changing gamertag.

    not only happens with the Japanese it happens with many other characters, I suppose it will be restricted by regions

    Yeah as Elite said, its just a bug. Just like when it decides to show your gamertag in japanese characters

    Unfortunately you cannot use simple symbols such as ?, ., or ! in your Xbox gamertag.

    This is because Xbox has certain restrictions on the characters allowed in gamertags to avoid confusion, technical problems, and possible abuse. Symbols such as these can interfere with the system, cause display problems, or be used to create misleading or inappropriate names.

    Xbox gamertags only allow spaces, numbers, and characters from the following Unicode alphabets and scripts: Basic English, Latin, Extended Latin, Extended Latin-A, Hangul, Katakana, Hiragana, CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) symbols, Bangla, Devanagari, Cyrillic, Greek, and Thai.

    If the word has been added to the disallowed list then there's nothing you can do,in fact you may get a forced gamertag change in the future.
