DirectX12

Discus and support DirectX12 in XBoX on Consoles to solve the problem; It's the terminology that is the problem. DX12 is not going to make the GPU better, just easier to access what is there. Discussion in 'XBoX on Consoles' started by Throaty Empress, Aug 14, 2014.

It's the terminology that is the problem.

DX12 is not going to make the GPU better, just easier to access what is there.

  2. The software won't make the hardware better, but it will absolutely make a difference over time toward optimising for the hardware.

A Ferrarri can't beat a Tuk Tuk if the Ferrarri has a flat tyre.

  3. Updated drivers for gpus have always been an important part, if tile resources is being used that alone is a killer 3gb's of texture data summed up in only 32mb,s (roughly) which is the esram in the Xbox one leaving a heck of alot of head room and even these
tiny audio offloaders and other off loaders for certain things. And cloud processing fully operational.

Which is why this console was meant to be online always.

I know that drivers are an important part. That is why I don't accept automatic updates for them on my PC. Sometimes newer is not always better in the software front.

Unreal has it spot on. The hardware wont be made better but it is going to be easier to access the potential that is there, easier to optimise for.

Cloud computing has an interesting future but I'm not sure I'd ever want my single player campaigns requiring me to be always online.

  5. Fyi updated gpu drivers and dx12 is two different thing, since June SDK update drivers have been much better. Developers in the industry say both consoles are pretty much equal.

My own belief long term xbox one is more future proof.due to processing offload

A very high percentage is online anyways. Now they have to program azure compute for offline and online or cheaper just online only depending on revs hugely beneficial for us gamers.

It is where it is going always a good and bad

  6. Again this I know but I hope people realise that just because the One has DirectX 12, that doesn't mean developers will be using it. At least not straight away.

After all there is a reason that DirectX 9.0c is still being used by some games despite being released in 2004. It's supported on every Windows from XP to 8.1.

The One will still support DirectX 11, it'll have to or all our current games would stop working.

As I mentioned before I'm interested in cloud computing, I'd just rather not have it in my single player games. I can go back to my Atari 2600 and play games if I wish, will I be able to go back to the One in over 30 years time and play single player games
if they've been linked to the cloud?

^unfortunatley thats a side effect of the digital world we live in though isnt it. Will you be able to look back at your photo albums in 30 years as most are now digital, will you be able to access your digital movie and music content? Who knows as long
as the apocalypse doesnt arrive and the interweb collapse then yes you probably will. Again who knows.

It doesn't have to be though.

Digital photos can be printed off. Hell my local Boots has a machine where you just plug the SD card in and it'll print them for you.

Music is a yes because I only buy from Amazon, where the MP3s are DRM free. This means I can put them on what device I choose and make hard copies.

Now movies you may have a point for. I've only bought three movies digitally and that was from Xbox Video, while the 360 lets me download them the Xbox One has for some reason removed the option.

@Throaty - The only reason DX9.0 etc. is still used if because those game devs want to ensure they support older PCs etc. That won't be the case with DX12 for X1 dev. - and yes we will only get the benefit once devs use it - but it is a "no-brainer" for
devs to use it as soon as they can (as long as it doesn't detract from their committed release date).
