DirectX 12: Unlocking the Xbox One

Except its Brad Wardell, who just spews PC relevant stuff and then reiterates that it will have the same effect on xbox one

I'll believe it when I see it

    @Bird

You're the last person I thought would post a link to that article, you're selling PS4's in a Xbox forum. It's saying what I've been saying about DX12 since it was announced.

This will deliver more solid framerates on the Xbox One and help to close the performance gap between multi-platform titles. There is a chance that resolution will also be improved, but at the least it will allow more effects to be used in games
thanks to more headroom to implement them.

Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock, said: “If I can just learn Vulkan then I can get to a lot of platforms, I don’t want to have to learn Sony’s special API, even if I would gain a few frames-per-second in doing so.”

All DX12 is going to do in regards to the One is bring it closer to what the PS4 is already doing and bring an end to the 900 vs 1080 discussions. The CEO of Stardock is now saying that Vulkan will continue to out perform DX12 which will still mean better
looking exclusives on the PS4 or at least higher framerates.

DX12 is going to be bringing the big performance gains to the PC's and the higher end hardware. That's why all of the tech demos and benchmarking demos have been done of PC hardware rather than showing us real world numbers on the One.

I'm sure we'll start seeing more of these articles that are bringing down the hype ( most of which was created by gamers rather than MS) for the expectations of gaming on the Xbox related to DX12.

This is going to give a slight boost to the Xbox One performance. It is not going to make a huge difference. Besides... There is hardly a difference between the two consoles any ways. 180p? Not much of a difference.

Remember how the 7th gen competition's console was more powerful as well? How'd that work out? Xbox 360 was still the better place to game. Better Games, Better Community, and Better Service.

I truly believe that cloud computing is where we are going to have a significant advantage. Just my opinion though.

  7. @NxtDoc1851 Regarding your second paragraph that is very well an opinion. Some people preferred the competitions console and would say basically the same thing about the ps3. Since I'm going to as of next week be a multi-console player and the x1 will be
    my first Microsoft console.

As for the subject, I think DX 12 will improve the xbox ones performance, but it is not going to be that major of a change as Phil has also said this will not be that major.

*IMHO: Software improvements are always a good thing, but until the Hardware is vastly improved, it's just a bandaide covering a festering sore.

(*) IMHO means. In My Honest Opinion. Yours WILL no doubt vary!

  9. I could see DX12 giving a better boost than some are saying currently. I can also understand why they are not saying it yet. And you really have to understand how the hardware is utilized and how making certain software improvements can be huge sometimes.
DX12 and subsequent improvements can and may be big.

I can get much better performance out of a similar setup as the Xbox One. You know if I can do it that MS and other companies with many more minds working it can.

    Question...

Does anyone here have hands on knowledge on what DX12 will or will not not do for PC, or XB1?? opr have any developer experience using DX12

    waiting

    still waiting

    no??

them lets not comment on what you think might happen...

there is a reason why we comment on a forum... of a website that happens to develop software by talented people... but yet.. we are in a forum.. of a website... see where this is going...??

  11. Well given the fact that Phil Spencer himself said it wasn't going to make a big change on the xbox one I tend to believe him on that. Obviously DX 12 will be taken advantage of for pc games.

    @tohellnbak

I'm not sure what you were getting at with your last paragraph but....

There have been several tech demo's released with DX12 ( even a Forza 5 re-build) so we can see first hand what the performance increases are and as it relates to lower end current hardware the gain is minimal.

That's to be expected and has always been that way. It's the threads that get started where people only look at the catchy headline "DX12 to bring 600 percent increases" and don't actually read the article that cause the hype snowball to start rolling and
    people end up disappointed.

DirectX 12 is also being overplayed for the PC as well, a exclusive selling point to get everyone onboard for Windows 10. DirectX 11 serves my PC just fine and there's no game on the horizon which relies solely on DX12 that I'm interested in. I never "upgraded"
to Windows 8/8.1 and don't plan on using Windows 10. Linux is the next OS that I'll adopt ('Witcher 3' & 'Arkham Knight' are all ready coming to Linux) by the time Windows 7 (a truly great OS for Gaming) will no longer serve my need. I see a growing movement
of AAA developers porting for Linux and nothing but inflated hype about Windows 10. I won't fall for the 1st Year Free "upgrade" for Windows 7 to 10, the Linux based Steam OS will be Free for many years past that should I choose to upgrade...DirectX 12: Unlocking the Xbox One :)

  15. The hardware we have ...is what we have .

Improvements will come with software and programming .

Look at the first ... and ....latest 360 games ..chalk and cheese .

    Dx12 is just a tool.

People that crunch numbers are missing the point in my opinion .

A great place to game .
