Directv picture quality severely degraded when running through Xbox One

I've had picture issues with watching live TV for what seems like at least a month if not ever since day one on 11/22. Actually problem is even worse when watching recorded TV. Picture quality downgrades from 1080p to what looks like maybe 480i. Grainy quality
with blotchy dark tones and more recently some issues with text crawls at bottom of news & sports channels.

Layout is Directv (HD DVR model HR22) HDMI to XboxOne HDMI to TV Optical audio to home theater receiver.

Also having problems with TV app not starting several times now. At least a couple have been after watching a bluray in the XB1. Really hoping this can be fixed with software update, otherwise this is deal breaker as TV integration was only thing that has
kept my loyalty vs jumping to PS4.

    :)

Xbox one - Running Sky HD box through HDMI

I'm not in UK but I did notice when I ran my satellite provider(directv US) through the xbox one that there was a very noticeable drop in picture quality.

Crushed Blacks, Improper color Gamut, Digital noise using TV with HDMI in

Has anyone at MS acknowledged these issues when using the HDMI in for TV? It is really obvious these are real problems when you compare the HDMI video signal to the original video signal coming out of the Cable box.

Picture quality is pretty clearly degraded passing through the Xbox one.

Directv picture quality severely degraded when running through Xbox One

After the recent March update thought HDTV picture would be improved. Not so the picture quality is total rubbish!! I will not run tv through X Box One and am therefore massively dissapointed..

  5. aintry,

I have seen with the HR22 that using the low power state on the Xbox helps resolve the HDCP error you may be seeing with the black screen. Also,

What output do you have the HR22 set to?

    MadeGrunt50,

Is it safe to assume you are in the UK (I ask because of the use of 'rubbish', although pleasing to the ear it is not normally in the US vernacular)? Which leads me to the usage of the 50Hz option, did you change it (also, the use of massively is not normally
us based)? Also the info below helps a great deal. In addition please create a new thread, as it does not seem as though you are using DirecTV (unless you are a transplant, in that case: welcome to the states):

    1. Make of Cable/Sat box (also called an STB): Motorola

    2. Model of Cable/Sat box (usually found on the bottom): DCX3200

    3. Make of TV: Samsung

    4. Make of Receiver (if used) (also called an AVR): Pioneer

    5. Model of Receiver (usually found on the bottom): AVR-1913

    6. Layout: STB HDMI Xbox One HDMI TV

On a side note: Using HDMI 2.0 (or high speed 1.4) of a good quality is very highly recommended. It has solved more issues than I care to comment on. Very inexpensive or old HDMI cables can lead to a very poor experience.

    -Cheers

    Thanks for the reply(ies),

If it helps, my TV is a Panasonic Viera VT-65.

Output on HR22 is set to 1080p. I've noticed a few times recently that when I try to watch a recorded program originally broadcast in 1080p (e.g. HBO's True Detective), I will briefly get a DTV popup saying my TV doesn't support the resolution of this program
(or something of that nature...the message displays only for a second or less then goes away). Since the HR22 is connected to the XB1, I would assume that means the HR22 is thinking the XB1 is the TV. Anyway, this was something I noticed since my original
post, so thought I'd mention it.

I'm using a Monster HDMI cable (not sure how to tell what version) to run from the HR22 to the XB1, and the HDMI cable that came with the XB1 to run from the XB1 to the TV.

  7. Try swapping the cable up. If the monster cable is a 1.3 that result could be expected. Try testing @ 720p just to see. FYI the compression used within some STB's are different than the broadcast. Some menu screens act oddly due to this as well. It is something
we are working on, but would like more information about the effected boxes. At the moment we are eliminating variables as the testing phase was very successful. I find most issues are locally based (that is not to say there are no issues to be found), which
is why I am interested in finding them.

Thank you for the information and the feedback thus far. Please feel free to keep me in the loop as this is important stuff.

    -Cheers

Directv picture quality severely degraded when running through Xbox One

Soooo, after over 3 months I have just started to watch TV through the Xbox due to the 50mhz update.

Sadly, I have been forced to disconnect the TV through the X1 due to awful picture quality. When sky is passed through the Xbox, the picture is significantly worse. The image is much darker and overall very drab. I have gone through the X1 picture setup
but this doesn't improve the TV image at all. As opposed to some of the above complaints, I have no issues with menu's, just the picture quality.

Why would I choose to degrade a 52" plasma by passing it through the Xbox One? Again, I really cant believe this is the main selling point of the console, why pay £400+ to turn your £1500 TV into a substandard £300 TV?

    TV: Samsung Plasma PS51E550

    Digibox: SKY+ HD

Cables used/tried: Original X1 HDMI, Original SKY HDMI, SYNN HDMI (I am not sure if these are 1.4, or even if that will make a difference)

    Output: I have tried 720p and 1080p

    Bitterly disappointed

Hey XB1R Hermes, yes indeed UK, Derbyshire to be precise. I have tried to adjust settings so so many times and it really does not help. The HDMI cable is the provided one. Not sure if the 50 hz is switched, do you have to do it manually Directv picture quality severely degraded when running through Xbox One :)

Yes indeed, HDMI cables make a huge difference. Whether or not it will fix the issue you are seeing, I don't really know. I have seen many positive reports that the SkyHD STB and Xbox One have been working well together since the update.

That is the reality of using the passthrough. Picture degradation will happen.

Wow, this went bad... I assume you found the 50Hz setting. What happened between the setting and... where you are at right now?

On my part: It is my goal to find things that are not working right on the Xbox. So I can track them, send them to engineering... However with no testing proved, I wont forward it on. TV pass-through is a complex business with more variables than I care
to mention at the moment. Which is why the elimination of variable is important. What can I do to prove it is ‘the Xbox’s fault’ so that it can be fixed.

The reason for the mod edit is simple, no cursing. Believe me, we can all read into the tone of posts; the usage of extra verbs is normally a solid give-away.

I do realize it is frustrating to have things not work. But I/We are here to help. There may be nothing can be done but sending info to engineering. UK updates are coming soon, please stay tuned for future details.

    -Cheers

OK Apologies but I kind of hoped XBOX one would work out of the box I dont think thats to much to ask. I really think this machine is trying to punch way above its weight thats all. I spent nearly £500 on this machine and as it stands am really feeling let
down!! Oh and by the way this is about XBOX not some way of trying to make PS4 look better..
