Direct X12 Game Changer?

PS4 does support DirectX 11 though, so it isn't as if all people developing for the console need to use its API.

So again. You have three machines Xbox One, PS4 and PC (with Windows 7 and 8) that support DirectX 11.

Only two that will support DirectX 12, the One and the PC with Windows 8.

Multi-platform developers are going to go with the API that is supported on the most platforms. And that is Direct X 11.

Though of course I am unaware if the Xbox One supports OpenGL, I can't imagine that it doesn't. So that could end up being the go to option.

    Direct X12 the game changer

Have to wait until full details are out but certainly looks like a huge boost to what will be possible currently. I would imagine less then half of the Xbox is being used currently. AP hinted at better then ryse graphics for upcoming games.

I doubt it will have a huge impact.

DirectX 10 and 11 have failed to make any sort of significant impact since their release.

I've played Arkham City and Origins with DirectX 11 turned on and there was no real difference. Certainly nothing 'game changing'.

Plus will 12 be on other consoles? Exclusives might make use of it but are multiplatform developers going to spend time programming for DX12 when a lower version will run across all systems?

What do you mean "turned on" with regards direct x ? Where you switching from open gl to direct x ? What graphics card where you using. Remember software wrote to use special hardware is very different to software compatible hardware.
What do you mean "turned on" with regards direct x ?
That it was enabled in the options for the game.

You can run City and Origins in DirectX 9 mode should you wish, PC versions of course. This is because huge amounts of PCs still run Windows XP, which of course only supports up to DirectX 9.

Developers don't want to miss out on those users. There are relatively few DirectX 10 and 11 only games.

So that is why I said I can see Xbox One exclusives making use of DX12. Yet if other platforms aren't running it, then are multiplatform developers really going to put in that extra effort? I doubt it.

If developers want their games to look the best then they will use it.

  10. ^^^ A very exciting prospect indeed. Xbox One with a lot more room to flex it's muscles.

  12. The real difference is not just with DX12, but the SDK and toolset they are creating for the developers, as per developer request. Now That can make a pretty big difference as the SDK the developers had to create games for the Xbox One with has been pc
sdk, ot tailored to the Xbox architecture.

    Direct X12 the game changer

I can understand dx9 not adding much to a game, esp. If it's not even wrote for it, and your graphics card could probably handle dx11 but the game is aimed at a lowest denominator. This is dx12 and the console can run games wrote on old engines (360 dx7
?) Which we are currently seeing, bf4 etc. So imagine new engines wrote for dx12 like a new halo, is going to rock.

My card handles DirectX11 very well but that wasn't the point.

The point was that DirectX 9 is still supported because a great many people still only have that version available to them, by choice or not. Game companies do not want to miss out on those customers and so DX11 features don't tend to be 'game changing'.

So this is exactly what could happen to the One. Developers who are also planning to release on PS4 and PC could end up not adding great DX12 features because it is added work.

Why not make all platforms look great with DirectX 11 instead of spending time on features that only one platform is going to be able to use.

Ps. I know DX12 is coming to PC but only it seems to Windows 8. But its market share is quite low compared to Windows 7.

Could it be true that the Xbox One was actually designed and built to run DirectX 12? And if it is true would it also mean that the Xbox One is not using all its hardware capabilities yet?
