  1. Digital Game Resale Marketplace Proposal for Microsoft Store

This proposal presents the implementation of an official system within the Microsoft Store that allows users to resell previously purchased digital games under platform-controlled conditions.

The objective is to create a secure digital secondary market where users can sell their games at a slightly lower price (equal to or up to approximately 10% less, adjustable based on data analysis), while Microsoft receives a percentage from each transaction.

This model introduces a scalable and innovative revenue stream, improves user experience, and strengthens ecosystem control.

    Introduction

The present proposal outlines the implementation of an official system within the Microsoft Store that enables users to resell previously acquired digital games under controlled conditions established by the platform.

The goal is to develop a secure digital secondary market, where users can resell their games at a slightly reduced price, while Microsoft benefits from a percentage of each completed transaction.

    System Functionality

    1. Eligibility Condition

Only games that meet the following condition may be resold:

Purchased directly through the Microsoft Store.

This requirement reinforces the official ecosystem and incentivizes purchases within the platform.

    2. Selling Process

The user selects a game from their digital library.

The user sets a price within an authorized range:

Equal to or up to a defined percentage lower than the current store price (e.g., 10%).

The game is listed in a dedicated section, such as:

    “Digital Second-Hand Marketplace.”

    3. Buying Process

    Another user purchases the game.

The game is automatically transferred to the buyer’s account.

The game is removed from the seller’s account.

    4. Commission for Microsoft

Microsoft receives a percentage from each transaction:

    Example: 10%–20% per sale.

This model generates recurring revenue without requiring the production of new licenses.

    Benefits for Microsoft

    1. New Revenue Stream

    Monetization of digital resales.

Continuous income even after the initial sale.

    2. User Retention

    Prevents unsafe practices such as:

    Full account selling (security risks).

Keeps users within the official ecosystem.

    3. Increased Initial Sales

Users are more likely to purchase games if they know they can resell them.

    Reduces psychological resistance to buying.

    4. Full Ecosystem Control

    Unlike external markets:

    Microsoft controls minimum pricing.

Microsoft controls security and digital ownership.

    Benefits for Users

    Sellers

    Recover part of their investment.

No need to sell entire accounts.

    Safe and official process.

    Buyers

    Access to lower-priced games.

    Full security (no fraud risk).

Games are directly linked to their accounts.

    Market Impact

This system replicates the success of traditional second-hand physical markets, adapted to a digital environment.

    Key advantages include:

    No product degradation.

    Instant transfer.

    Full traceability.

Additionally, it solves a current issue:

Many users purchase games, complete them, and no longer use them.

Currently, that value is completely lost.

    Key Considerations

    1. Price Regulation

    Establish discount limits to prevent:

Excessive competition with new game sales.

    2. Developer Rights

    Possibility to include:

    Commission for developers.

Option to exclude certain titles if desired.

    3. Anti-Fraud Control

    Implement restrictions such as:

    Minimum ownership period before resale.

    Sales limits per user.

    Conclusion

This proposal represents a high-impact strategic opportunity for Microsoft by transforming digital ownership into a dynamic asset within its ecosystem.

    It enables:

    Recurring revenue generation.

    Improved user experience.

    Elimination of unsafe practices.

    Growth of the official store.

In essence, this proposal aims to transform the Microsoft Store into a living marketplace, where purchasing a game is no longer a definitive expense, but a flexible investment.

Xbox one wish list and things that kind of irritate me

The originally proposed DRM had resale in the pipeline. Just not through GameStop. Sure Microsoft would have taken a cut, but you sell a game for $50 on the marketplace, MS takes $10 leaving you $40. Beats the $7.50 GameStop will give you.

    Digital game trade-ins

There are rumors MS is working on a digital resale marketplace. Nothing more than rumors at this time so take it with a grain of salt.

Downloaded "Gears of War" successfully in Germany from German store. Can not re-download

No as the content isn't available in the German store

    Yes, i definately was.

There is also reports that "Gears of War" was indeed on the German Xbox Live Marketplace (some weeks ago, i don´t know if it was the same timeframe). People thought that the game was re-reviewed by USK and that it was on purpose, but it wasn´t. It was an
    error by Microsoft.

After typing in the code, the description of the game was German. BTW: The game was offered for 4,94€ on the German-Xbox-Live Store

I think i will never buy stuff digital again. You will only get problems with that... If i had the DVD from Gears-of-War, then i could still play it...

I think the topic can be closed.

The result is: No game, No code, No proposal from Microsoft

If you buy digital you can get ***.

    Donate digital games?

I think we need a market for digital game resale.

why are download games the same price or more than disc.

Here is an idea. Microsoft allows resale of digital games through a digital marketplace run by gamers. So if I purchase a $60 digital copy and get bored with it I can sell it on there. I put it up for sale and it is automatically locked in my inventory.
If it sells it is removed from my inventory and added to the other guys inventory. Microsoft and the publisher get a cut and I get a remainder. Even if I only get 50% that is way more than I currently get. After selling a couple games I could use the funds
to get a new game and those funds can only be redeemed for games on the marketplace so any money spent on the marketplace effectively becomes profit for Microsoft. Is it an ideal situation? No. It is a lot better than what we have, though. This would give
digital copies added value over what they are now while allowing for Microsoft to sort of milk them a bit for more profit and it shouldn't cut too deeply into new game sales because no new license is created.
