I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about microsoft doing something like this but i think this could be a good idea. The question that I am asking is that i think microsoft should do sorta what gamestop with trade ins with digital full game content.
It would be nice to be able to trade in digital games (59.99) and get some credit towards purchasing a new digital game a (59.99). Some credit back would nice.

    :)

    Digital Downloaded Games

Recently sold my XONE to fund my PS4, A family member ended up purchasing the console & requested it was formatted which obviously wiped everything off, Ive had a text today saying they was able to redownload all games that was previously on there along with DLC ghost season pass for example.

Just a heads up games must be linked with the console rather than the GT.

    Digital game downloads??

It's brought up a lot. Game prices are mostly set by the publishers. So they typically price them at MSRP and try to leave them there as much as possible. Retailers are able to vary their prices as long as they cover their costs.

At least in the US it's going to take some messy court battles before that could happen because it's currently a grey area to if you own the software or if you've just purchased a license to use it.

In 2008 a guy re-selling AutoCAD software on Ebay won a court battle to allow him to do it but he was selling it on a physical disc which somewhat followed the previous work around that you're selling the disc not the software.

Digital only content is different because the developer/publisher would need to be involved to transfer the license and there isn't an upside to them doing it.

I said this in another thread, but what you want is for MS to pay you not to play a game. Doesn't make any sense for them to do that.

I'm trying to wrap my head around how this even makes sense to trade in something that isn't physically real.

It doesn't and makes even less sense to why Publishers and MS would want to.

  9. I say ditch discs entirely and just sell the digital versions in the physical stores on cards with codes on them (as well as continuing to sell them online).

Keep them locked away or behind a counter so people can't steal them. That will make the physical retailers happy.

To make the customers happy, set up the codes so when the customer is done with the game and wants to get rid of it, they go to their purchase history with their respective retailer and input the same code to "deactivate" their purchase from all of their
respective devices/consoles. The retailer then sends this information to the developer/publisher who then sends the retailer a new card with the same code. A financial history of who purchased the card previously can then be tracked (either through credit
or agreement signature if paid in cash) and recorded with the card so the same code can't be used by the same person twice, which would allow for a resell.

This way, we both get digital and (somewhat) physical, the retailers keep making money as do digital distributors, floor/shelf space is saved all-around, and everyone is happy.

...wait, doesn't this sound something like what MS was trying to do in the 1st place? My bad! *SMH*

The developers and publishers gain nothing from that scenario in fact your plan cost them even more money because they need a system in place to deactivate/activate codes which means additional employees. So I don't see the "happy" for them.

I think if push comes to shove developers and publishers will simply turn digital gaming into a "pay as you play" scenario much like PS Now is trying or like subscription based MMO's work. That'll hurt gaming....we'll see genres disappear, every game will
have MP and we'll see more micro-transactions in games.

@GG If disks disappear completely there would be blood. Just like when the DRM rules were in place.

    as well)?

Multiplayer for the sake of adding content and longevity normally means poor quality.

Micro-transactions and DLC would become how developers and publishers will re-coop loses. We already see it to some extent on both the PC and consoles. Games release with limited content and then you get a slew of extra content at an additional cost.

The last two pre-orders I've done have cost 79 (Horizon) and 99 (Destiny) bucks. Forza 5 did it, the list goes on and on. That will become the norm and we'll find ourselves paying significantly more for games to get content that years ago would have been
    all there on release.

They probably won't care if people are trading in limited content digital games when each successive owner will need to purchase the additional content too.

"Pay to Win" will start finding its way into retail consoles games especially shooters, we already see pay unlocks, next we'll see gear/items that can only be purchased with real cash.

Developers and publishers are going to get their money somehow and it's already getting worse.

  14. Will be the norm, Randver? I hate to disappoint you, but it already is! In fact, it has been ever since the infamous horse armor debacle - people complained and yet the companies kept doing it. Want to know why? Because people kept buying! And you know something?
People are still doing it! This, my friend, is a war that I'm afraid we've already lost. Money talks and there's nothing you or I can do to stop the wave of consumerism that is simply too strong in this day and age.

You people that trade games only have yourselves to blame for DLC being added to games at extra charge. It's been a tactic to try and get you to keep your games longer making them worth less for trade in and therefore not flooding the market with cheaper
second versions weeks after release. How else are they paying for these games that cost millions?

Sometimes you must look in the mirror and take some blame yourself.
