Did not choose, and now cannot change GamerTag for Child's Live account

We want to create an Xbox Live account for our child with GOLD level so he can do some online gaming with specific friends.

To this end, we successfully created a "child" account that required us to log into my existing Live Acct for verifications (as well as the $.50 verification charge).

Upon acct creation, a gamertag was apparently assigned automatically and there is a message on the account indicating the tag was changed from some other gamertag at a time cooinciding roughly with the account creation.

We did not set, nor choose either the previous or current tag so I reject the notion that we "changed" gamertags. These just appeared from nowhere from our perspective.

However at this point, when logged into the Child live account, it does not permit us to access the "Profile" for the purpose of choosing a GamerTag of our own.

How do we change the child account's gamertag?

Will there be a charge to do so?

You can easily change your Xbox Live gamertag. If your
gamertag was created for you during your initial Xbox Live sign-up (meaning, you did not choose your gamertag), you can change the gamertag one time for free. Additional Xbox Live gamertag changes cost extra.

 

Gamertag missing

To make the story short:

- a did a mistake removing from family the account of my child

- I added back the account and changed email to a new one

- both accounts (child and parent) see each other as family members

Problems:

- parent privacy & security settings : cannot see my child's gamertag

- child - privacy & security settings : I get an error

- child - change gamertag: error too

- parent can log in to xbox live

- child cannot log in xbox live: error says parent account is not valid

Help to solve this mess is needed!!!

What is the childs Gamertag now? If it is the one posting then it is not a auto-generated name but one someone created. All generated tags use numbers at the end.

 

Going into this effort, the child does not have a Gamertag on the "Live" system as he did not have a "Live" Account.

So far, I'm only trying to set this part up via PC, not the XBOX console.

The plan is that once we have his Live account setup (with a gamertag), we will create a new profile on the XBOX console with that tag and then link it to the account.

The child's gamertag that was assigned is "ReadableBoat27". The posting tag is mine as the adult from my original account.

 

Problem Solved:

I was attempting to change the GamerTag via the Edit Gamertag link in the "Profile" page. Attempting to access this Profile page was resulting in the dreaded "Uh oh... that shouldn't have happened. It appears you have found a glitch in the system." message
(Using Chrome in either Win7 or Linux).

I found an option to change GamerTag under the "Xbox Settings" page. The link there allowed me to change tags. Because it was only the first change from the auto-assigned tag, it claims it will not charge me for it. The change was successful and there
is no payment option on the child account. Will have to check to see if the parent account was charged.
