dhcp issues with xbox and windows 10

both time out trying to talk to the hdcp

no problems with iPhones, iPad, ms surface tablet or imac

but when the iMac boot into windows 10 and the xbone both time out and get a generic ip not in the range the dhcp give

even with a static ip they can't get network access

happened on monday and happen today between it worked fine

    restart and power cycled everything

tried disconnecting the cable modem so the router is alone

tested for updates in firmware for router

tested with other ethernet cable from router to cable modem

any ideas ? suppose I could get a new router but if it too had that behaviour then ...

    :)

Windows Server DHCP + XBox Issues.

It turns out this is an XBox only issue, using the XBox direct connected to the modem it still has the same problem. Also, Shad0wmanUK thanks for the sugestion...the switch is manged, and while it does not have the option to turn off STP, I changed it to
Rapid STP and set the XBoxs' ports to the highest priority in STP, which has decreased the time for the connection test to connect to the network.

  3. Windows Server DHCP + XBox Issues.

The address of 169.xxx.xxx is an APIPA address which means your Xbox is not finding the DHCP server.

"XBox(s) do not attempt to obtain a dynamic IP address until I test the XBox Live connection, until I test they attempt to use a sell assigend 169.xxx.xxx.1-which is way out of my subnet of 172.16.0/24-with no subnet mask, gateway, or DNS."

What is your IP address range? When you test Xbox live connection dose it connect? If so dose it appear in the DHCP on the Windows Server?

Is it always wired or wireless?

MAC filtering turned on or off? Added console to MAC address list?

    Tried switching channels?

Just some ideas. It looks live you've tried almost everything.

will bring home the long ethernet cable tomorrow from work to test (did that Tuesday but then the problem had fixed itself) havnet changed the channel as no other devices display this issue

haven't added mac filtering and if I had then I suppose it would not have fixed itself

iPod touch 1g, iPod touch 3g, appletv 4g, surface 1g, macbook pro 13" 2009, iMac 2011 in osx not (in windows 10) iPad 2, iPhone 6s, iPhone 5c all works just fine only xbone and iMac in windows 10 display this issue and only today and monday been using this
    setup since 2012

what router are you using? what IP range is being used for DHCP?

in Windows 10, open a CMD prompt and run it as an administrator and run the following commands:

    netsh advfirewall reset

    netsh int ip reset

    netsh winsock reset

and then reboot. this will reset the Windows firewall rules and the TCP/IP stack.

as for the Xbox, unplug the power to it, unplug the power to the router, leave the modem because it has nothing to do with this issue, when you have the power unplugged(don't just try to turn it off) to both the the router and the Xbox, plug the router back
in first, wait until it is fully booted up, then plug in the Xbox and turn it on.

apple airport extreme the old not odd tower one

    ip range 10.0.1.X

your console commands didn't help but making it forget the network fully fixed it in the windows 10's end

I turned both router and xbox off many times I usually power the xbox fully down when I don't use it

it does work if I connect it by ethernet

my next step will be setting up the isp router that I got from them and see if it will function for connecting the xbox

at one point I connected the cable and started up and when it was connected I disconnected the cable and it seemed to work

though not 100% because after playing fallout4 for a bit it crashed so a disconnected network could have caused that crash not 100% sure yet

Windows Server DHCP + XBox Issues.

    Hi,

Hmmm doesn't look like you'll get a fix for this here I'm afraid :(

I don't believe the Xbox uses BOOTP and adding that would require a firmware update which isn't going to happen for one person.

I can't give you any tips on the Server side I'm not a server guy. But the Dell switch, is it managed? Can you change port settings etc?

I'm a Cisco guy myself and with Cisco there is a portfast option you can enable on ports so that it goes straight into forwarding mode instead of waiting or spanning tree to play out, if this is off DHCP can fail as it times out, so you need to turn it on.

Do you have a similar option to portfast on your switchport for the Xbox?

Any reason you don't want to assign a static to the Xbox?
