DEVS take on NOT always online

    i was thinking...

since 2013 e3 when the alwais online for ps4 and xbox1 got cancelled, we see xbox1 doing all the effort they can to bring the console to an non-always online console.

but we never heard what the game devs take on all this, they have been working on games thinking console would be always online.. so that screws up their plans right? think about the games that were announced: forza5, the crew, destiny, and on ps4, driveclub,
watcdog... ect. all thoses games were developped with that in mind..

i just wonder how dev like ubisoft feel about all this. it must be exiting for them to see more and bigger possibilities to make bigger or totally diffrent games they could not have done without always online benefit.

and working on some games for so long.. and having to work like crazy to fix them so the now work offline,, i personally would have been ***...

wish i could have a dev, feedback, but that would be bad publicity from them to talk *** about what happened :S

so i guess we will never know

    :)

The devs have said many times Destiny isn't an MMO... it's a "shared world experience".

DEVS take on NOT always online

Obviously, a game that requires online functionality needs to always be online. Good luck playing Titanfall with no internet. So any game that was intended to "always be online" will still need to "always be online". That's as obvious as the grass is green

  5. I'm sure the author knows that, SS. What the OP is stating is that they may originally have meant to be online only and as a result of the 2013 backlash, had to change things late into their development, which led to many a development woe. DEVS take on NOT always online ;)

    yes Galactic, you understood.

the devs must have seen the possibilities, and then have the grass cut underneath their feet.

I'm curious, what exactly did they have to change after finding out Microsoft reversed the console's always online policy, even though the game is still always online?

The cloud didn't go anywhere. Not to mention, developers have no problems blasting Microsoft when they feel burned. Microsoft has been blasted about charging ridiculous fees to update games. Microsoft has been blasted about not allowing free DLC. But as
this thread so clearly points out, no one heard a peep from developers about the reversal of this policy. Most likely because it didn't affect crap. Also, the "always online" policy, didn't need to be "always online". You just needed to check in once every
24 hours. You could check in once a day and unplug your ethernet cable and play always offline.

  10. While you may be right about the 24 hr. check-in, SS, most of the other stuff you mentioned was reversed a long time ago and no longer applies. For example, the fee to update games was done away with in a public announcement from MS themselves and the DLC
can now be given away free, if the developers choose to do so - evidence of this has been shown with Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare. I imagine there wasn't a peep from the developers regarding the issue because doing so would be damning MS to even more
woes, which would affect the developers' own game sales negatively.

Obviously, I'm aware of any policies that were reversed. Why were they reversed? Because Microsoft got put on blast by developers. And you're telling me that these same developers would keep quiet about having to rewrite code, increasing their production
costs, because they didn't want to hurt Microsofts feelings? Dude, stop. Just stop.

  12. It has nothing to do with feelings and everything to do with profit. If they blasted MS, it could cost MS a lot more than it already had, and in turn, the developers' own profits.

Um no, Microsoft reversed the policy because people were angry and when they did reverse it, pre-orders shot up like it just took viagra. You think people are not going to buy a game that looks awesome on a console they pre-ordered because the developers
said mean things about Microsoft? Get real, dude. I get that you attempted to make a point and you want to see it through. But seriously, stop digging that hole.

    I don't think,it change anything for devs/publishers....

The games that were suppose to be solo/offline,stay that way.Same thing, with always online games.

And in the middle, games that have both (offline/online),got even more online features (AC unity,Far Cry 4)....

I dont think they cared TBH... devs know it was only the very small vocal minority that complained or even care about needing to be online.... they dont really go by forums or blogs... just facts and documented stats... they see XBL records of 25 million
members... spending approx 8 hours a day online gaming or streaming... then those same members on the internet, they a get a good feel that a high vast majority of the people are "connected" for the most part of a full day....
