  1. Device Control

Hey, I'm trying to setup device control on my Xbox with an A/V receiver. I have an Onkyo HT-R398, however it isn't on the list my console provides when I enter it and its also unable to control it when I sent a VOLUME UP command.

I have an HDMI and Optical Cable both plugged in, in my experience optical has worked better when trying to control.

Any ideas why it isn’t nt working? Thanks

    :)

Optical carries no control commands, it’s just a raw data stream

HDMI can carry control commands as well as supporting many more channels of audio and higher resolutions. Using both is redundant.

You will have to, as others have mentioned, ourchase a series console to use HDMI CEC

No there is no Kinect. I have an HDMI out and an Optical cable going to my reciver

Okay. Last, maybe silly, question: does it have a Kinect hooked up, or an IR extension cable (article from Xbox Support)?

From my understanding, the Xbox One accepts controller commands through IR, though there was no IR sensor on-board the device. The IR sensors were built into the Kinect. If there is no Kinect connected to the Xbox One, then an IR extension cable may be required.

Outside of this, the Xbox One did not come equipped with HDMI-CEC (the protocol that allows control through the HDMI), nor with the ability to transmit control back to the console through the optical cable.

To get started, let's try checking the settings. Head over to Settings > General > TV & display options > Device control, and then look and see if the following is enabled:

    • Console turns on other devices
    • Console turns off other devices
    • Other devices can turn console off
    • Use TV remote for console
If all of these are enabled and it's still not responding as expected, I will need some more details.

    1. Which Xbox console are you working with (Xbox One, Xbox One S/X, Xbox Series S/X)?
    2. How are you attempting to connect the receiver? Is it directly from the console to the receiver, or from the console to the TV and then the receiver?
I'll do my best to help or at least point you in the right direction.

It's an Xbox One. Directly to the console
