Detecting as Media Drive

I bought a CiT USB3.0 enclosure and put in a spare 500GB WD Blue Sata3 HDD but i can't get it to detect as a games & apps drive

Hi Erich,

is the drive itself USB 3? Does it give the same message if you directly connect into the xbox? Also are you using an enclosure with a WD drive versus a bought sealed ext.HDD?

I have seen reports of problems with enclosures so that could be one cause. Also if the drive itself is not usb 3 then the xbox might be detecting that and limiting it for media only. Please post back with the specs of your drive and we can go from there.

 

You need to have it formatted by the one prior to use it as game and stop device.

 

It won't give me the option to format it within my X1

 

Have you checked at settings / system /storage of you are able to format it there?

What happens if you reformat it to NTFS on your pc and then plug it again into the one?

 

Detects as media as soon as I plug it in with NTFS or exFAT. If I go to System > Storage the only options I get are "View Content".

The only thing I can think of is the Enclosure I bought isn't being detected as 3.0 by the X1 even though it says it is 3.0. When I benchmark the HDD via USB 3.0 on my PC Minimum speeds of 113MB/sec and a max of 126MB/sec which isn't far off of my 3TB Internal
WD Red drive @ max 145. Although its much slower than my 3TB Seagate Barracuda @ min169/201max.

 

This may be the problem then.

 

Ok, So, I pulled the 3TB barracuda drive from my gaming rig and speed tested it in the caddy, it had transfer rates of min 160 and max 174. The xbox still wouldn't ask me to format it and defaulted straight to Media Drive.

 

I don't think this is a speed problem, but a problem with the information the firmware of the enclosure provides to the Xbox so it's not recognized. If the firmware is not announcing itself as USB 3.0 it will not work.

 

Sorry to revive a long dead post but I've got an update about the situation.

I bought a 2TB Seagate external that people had said worked, and it does.

But only if I'm using my side USB port on my Xbox.

I was running the original enclosure on a USB 3 extension and I'd tried both rear ports with and without the extension but it still failed to pick up as a Games drive, tried it in the side port with the extension and without, they both pick up correctly.

Now I'm confused.
