destructive update

My Xbox updated at a normal pace and restarted console. upon returning to the home screen i found my profile deleted and my hardrive deformatted basically deleting the entire 150 GB of content stored on it. It Also is refusing to allow me to format the hardrive
to the xbox

Could it be that because of the destruction and the forever changing maps that the game needs to constantly be streaming from the disc in order to update all of this new and random information?
