Destiny review

I agree with Akame... which is something I don't always seem to do. lol

I'm going to play with some friends tonight and I'm sure I'll enjoy the experience, but that probably has more to do with playing with those guys.

I think the game has some neat ideas and tries to do these things, but it just can't do them as well as the games they are mimicking can. As I said before, it is a mixed bag. Some parts I really enjoyed it, other parts were dull and boring. If I had to
attach a score to the game, it would be a 7. 6/10 for playing solo and 8/10 for co-op.

 

I don't understand Bungie as they make a "MMO", this really isn't one, yet they keep everyone away from each other. Why have a hub where no one can talk to each other? Why have raids where you only can play with friends? For being a game based on other people
it sure feels lonely playing this game with a bunch of strangers quietly doing their thing in the background. So much potential but a miss by Bungie so far.

 

Destiny is Neocron refined. No tradeskills, just farming for engrams and XP. How fast can you make a group event appear? 15 minutes of wiping out everything on The Divide will do the trick.

I get the feeling the people giving negative reviews/impressions have never played an MMOFPS. Destiny is an instanced MMOFPS.

To summarize:

The Crucible is hosting a playlist this weekend with Dead Orbit artifacts as rewards. 3 v 3 on small to medium maps

The Raids open on September 26th with the Vault of Glass. Considered a Lvl 26 raid.

September also features a Crucible event entitled "Combined Arms" with no description; a story extension entitled "The Queen's Wrath" - Accept her orders; settle old scores. And October marks a return of the Iron Banner.

Bungie also teases new characters showing up in the Tower with story lines/factions to follow, Bungie developers entering the realm with bounties on their heads and a greater frequency of public events.

To the people who say this game is "boring" and not enough content? Here's what I say to you.

Hi Akame.

As I pointed out in the thread you are reffering to, though it's listed as a "Strike" for 1 - 3 players" you can have 6 playing.

Just start the event and invite people to your Fireteam.

Talk about "haste makes waste".

 

It takes more than "content" to make a game good.

They have used no imagination is designing these missions and strikes. They are all the same.

The game probably does appeal to the shooter crowd, someone who spent 100's of hours playing any of the "horde" modes in shooters will probably enjoy Destiny.

The people coming from MMO backgrounds are going to recognize the formula (rep grinds, "dungeon" runs, events, etc) but instantly see that no effort has been put into the game. The old saying "ignorance is bliss" comes to mind, if you don't know what's been
done in the past then you won't miss it.

The game didn't know what it wanted to be so they gave us a beautiful game with no depth. The people that think running around these open worlds to find a few chest is exciting seriously need to go play a real MMO, you'd never leave your house again.

 

I'm not actually sure what the critics want - I doubt they know.

But personally I love the game - it's attempting to merge FPS and MMO and I think it does it pretty well. People that "rush" through the game will not like it - but those that take the time to do other things (i.e. not just story mode) will find plenty
to keep them entertained.

It's easy to play solo and easy to play co-op....the game's UX is well thought out. The best I've seen - by a country mile.

PvP is very good too - plenty to keep you entertained there too.

The only criticism I have is that the story isn't "told" very well....I think more depth in the cut-scenes/voice overs would have helped. It's good but it is not as "epic" as Halo.

Is it the perfect game? No, but is it the best game out there are the moment. Yes, definitely.

I think the critics (me included) have made it very clear what we wanted.

After reading your post I feel like we are playing different games.

I didn't rush through the game, I'm lvl 12.

It's not easy to play solo or co-op. I'm playing a Hunter and I need to over level missions to complete them solo. Rather than letting me move through areas at my own pace so I can compensate for gear/skill the game places you in a confined area with a seemingly
never ending spawns. Even worse they come from areas you've already cleared, invisible doors or are simply dropped in.

Co-op the missions are doable, in fact they seem to be designed for more than one person. The problem is there is no matchmaking. The Strikes have matchmaking but they don't fill behind dropped players so if someone leaves you're starting over. I've done
the lvl 12 Strike (tried first time at 11) a half dozen times and have yet to complete it.

Many of the mobs are bullet sponges (especially the bosses), There are no boss mechanics or any other strategy required.....it's simply do you have the gear to do enough dps on the mobs to stop from being overwhelmed and killed.

So what do I want......more variety in the missions and strikes, boss mechanics, a reason to run around the open world areas and explore but at the very least give me a matchmaking system for pugs. Look at all the LFG post, even if your friends list is full
of people playing Destiny you are still hard pressed to find someone doing what you are doing with an open team.

 

How do you join a fireteam?

 

I'm shocked that I'm only lvl5. If I'd payed for it I might be upset, but it was free soooo. Absolutely nothing original, and none of the game mechanics are spectacular. I know my expectations were high, but that's no excuse for un satisfying this game is
so far.

The Strikes have a matchmaking system and will place you in a fireteam.

The only way to run missions/explore on a fireteam is to invite or be invited by other players. Open your menu and tab left, you'll see players in your area on your "roster". Problem is you have to send messages to see if they are interested in doing whatever
you're doing or just sending an invite and risk annoying people.

 

Good point on the enemy spawns. They're worse than Ninja Gaiden on the NES.

When bungie held of people reviewing the game I knew not to get too excited.
