Destiny for $28 bucks and digital is $60?

I'm not understanding the logic here...

On eBay the "Microsoft Store" is selling Destiny for 27.99 (was 30.00 two weeks ago).

Yet the digital copy which has less packaging, no shipping fees, etc.. is

I'm not sure who's running M$ but mixed pricing like this is a hard sell to get everyone to go Digital only!

The $10.00 code is for Xbox/Windows purchases, Destiny from MS Store = Game, Beta invite, $10.00 digital download. I couldn't pass up the $10 bucks free.

It's not just MS that sets prices and especially with hard copies at various retailers. I don't know that they're trying to get everyone to go digital only as much as they're just trying to give us the option to use it if the deal is there.

If you think about it, Microsoft does well to have their products in brick and mortar stores because more people see their wares. Whereas, digital only would only be available to people who bought a console in the first place. It's like an advertisement
when people walk by the cases and see all the games. Aside from that retailers drop their prices to get you in the store so you'll impulse buy other things.

I see where you're coming from but it's a little more complicated than that.

 

I would suggest purchasing the physical copy then. Occasionally you'll find some great digital deals where they might be better than a physical copy. At that point, I'd suggest purchasing the digital version.

 

And people still think the always on drm idea was bad....

It's Activision.

Physical copies are purchased by retailers to sell and they have the ability to adjust prices as needed. The Microsoft Store is clearing out their inventory of the game by putting it on clearance, in a way.

Digital copies are 100% controlled by the publishers. It's not a retail situation where stock needs to be cleared or anything of the sort, and Activision is notorious for not lowering the prices on their games. Call of Duty games remain $60 digitally even
after being out for years and having several new games in the franchise released after. Destiny is still $60 on Xbox Live and Playstation Network and don't expect that to change for quite some time.

 

If the digital prices are set by the publisher, it seems to me a digital copy would yield a much better return. Well let's break it down:

Approximate Costs of a $60 video game

Retailer Margin: $15

Returns: $7

Distribution/cost of goods: $4

Platform Royalty: $7

Publisher: $27

Seems publishers would about double their money if they just went with digital. It baffles me why the digital copy is sometimes more.

Primarily, to not antagonize their retail partners. While there are more point of sales than before to purchase game consoles, to the point where even manufacturers sell it to the consumer themselves, retail remains a necessary evil to this day.

They may be other reasons but I can't even begin to guess.

 

Welcome to one of the downsides of the digital revolution.

With a digital copy there is no drive to move stock, no need to lower prices in order to make room in the warehouse or store shelves. The digital copy has no risk of being knocked and damaged.

There is no reason for Microsoft to lower the price of a digital copy. It's no even as if there is any competition on their console for digital games.

 

You can never look at prices on bargain websites like eBay and Amazon. They always look to beat prices. And digital copies will always be more expensive.

Buy hard copy

 

Unless there is a digital sale...then you may want to consider it. That's the ONLY time I buy digital. Otherwise, you are getting jerked around.

I say buy the physical version of the game. It'll probably be a while before the digital version is on sale or lowered in price.

 

I had to go full digital now that my son plays. I'm not buying two copies and digital let's me share with him as long as my console home is set to his xbox .
